It was a Tender distributed by NSWGR in 1968 that Comeng had contracted to, with its Mechanical Branch Design Engineers producing 4 carriage types of the contract. Currently, before DDIU's operated, there were single-deck U-SET services provided by NSWGR which operated 20 daily services to and from Sydney, being hauled in 4,6 or 8car sets.
