Deanna's Restaurant
|
Deannas 107 Rivington St, New York, NY 10003-9076 Phone: (212) 420-2258 This relaxed bistro/supper club is a second coming for the down-home jazz bar whose original East Village location was closed by an electrical fire. Originally a 1920s-era Yiddish theater, the new space has seen several incarnations, most notably a sausage-smoking house. Kirk's renovation hasn't erased the site's old-world charm, and antique gems like a 100-year-old bar and Kirk's mother's classic Steinway have been added. Many fixtures, like the art deco iron doors, were purchased directly from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Much like the previous Deanna's, the new joint promises to attract a mixture of old and young jazz aficionados as well as the gaggle of old-school Harlem jazz musicians Kirk has befriended throughout her career as a performer. Look for many of these veterans to appear onstage alongside Deanna, who will sing most nights (except Sunday brunch, when her mom does a killer Edith Piaf set). Food tends toward the hearty bistro fare, and the staff is most friendly.
