About Us
History of the club:
The Deakin University Taekwondo club began in 1993. Since then members have been well represented at each Intervarsity and university competitions with a large degree of success.
This success has included numerous gold medals, having team members selected to represent Australia at the World University Games and being declared the Deakin team of the year in 2003. Individuals from our club have gone on to enjoy great success at state, national and international levels of competition. Our club operates as a member of the Melbourne Taekwondo Centre, one of the largest, eldest and most respected clubs to operate within Australia. We are very proud to be able to state that our members have proven just as capable as those of the full time clubs as evident from our competition and grading results. Deakin Taekwondo has established itself on a basis of blending the traditional skills and values of a martial art with the youthful energy and free thinking commonly associated with university students.
Mission:
The Deakin University Taekwondo Club aims to create a well-rounded taekwondo training schedule, focusing on grading, sparring, and self-defense.
Taekwondo is a martial art, bound by the rules and traditions of honour, discipline and respect. These are taught within lessons and practiced through the rules of etiquette that students learn in class. This is a principal component of our club.
Taekwondo provides a practical and effective system of self-defense, which creates a feeling of confidence and security within our members. Our instructors are committed to teaching quality and effective techniques that can be used as self-defense in real life situations. As training progresses, our students will feel more equipped to deal with a large variety of possible attacks and dangerous or threatening situations.
Taekwondo has been developed into a dynamic systemised sport, providing athletes with opportunities to compete at local, State, National, International and Olympic levels. Our program and qualified instructors will enable club members to participate at a very competitive standard. Throughout the year our affiliated club (Melbourne Taekwondo Centre), runs a number local competitions. These competitions provide an opportunity for all of our Deakin members to compete, including those at beginner level. This will be one of our primary areas of focus in terms of competition, along with the Victorian championships the Australian Open and the Australian University Games.
Our training sessions aim to develop the students self-defense, flexibility, skills, co-ordination, strength, confidence, self-discipline, and sparring skills. We aim to provide and maintain an environment where our members will feel welcome and comfortable when learning new skills that can be intimidating and difficult. This will be fostered through classes that remain disciplined and structured whilst being relaxed and fun. Students will be encouraged to work together and get to know each other so they feel more comfortable, accepted and happy. At all levels, our students are constantly encouraged to build their self-confidence and strengthen their self-esteem. Essential to our club is holding to the traditional martial arts code, which promotes the ethics of discipline, loyalty, honour, respect for parents and authority, compassion and friendship.
