Hello, My name is Denise. I was born and raised in New Hampshire. I went to Boston School for the Deaf in Randolph, Mass, graduated and then went on to a Hearing High School in my hometown in Manchester. I moved to MD in my very late 20's to enter Gallaudet and then stayed in this area since. I now live in VA. I grew up watching my hearing Mother at her sewing machine all the time. She was a good seamstress. I even tood sewing classes at the deaf school I have sewn some clothes in my early 20's, but have since stopped. I do some mending and some crafts such as stuffed animals which has left me with a lot of scraps of fabrics. Its a good thing I saved them all!! Why? Because in 1992 I was going camping and did not like the idea of using a sleeping bag so I thought of making a quilt from the scraps that I had saved. No patterns...just cut them all the same size from a square piece of cardboard and put them together. I went to the library and checked many quilting books to give me ideas of how to finish the quilt. Then again in 1998, I started making quilts and have doing it since. I have donated many to St. Jude's Research Hospital and other organizations. I have also made baby quilts, quilted tote bags, and I am most proud of my Window Attic Quilt with Sea Otters. I am interested in learning applique. I now work in a fabric store and enjoy seeing fabric all the time. I appreciate this deaf quilting group and have been a member for a year now. I love them and always look forward to the meetings. And to tell you the truth, my mind is always on quilting even if I'm not sewing. |
