| The Uni Video 4: Back in Action Or as it should be sub-titled Back in Inaction. The curse of crap footage struck once again as it had done with the second Uni Video. Some footage was hilarious, but for the most part, it was strained and pushing it. We put this down to it being a busy semester for one and all and at least one of us was working their ass off at any one time. It was either that or we were too tired, lazy or hung over to do anything. I tried my best to make the most out of the situation, and treated this fourth instalment as a chance to yet again further my style and make a much tighter, well made video; all wrapped up in an even more frenetic visual style. So while being the most well made Uni Video ever, it has not become the most memorable. The Uni Video: Rewound Again, the fever to make a double disc presentation (being a big fan of DVD, its just a fun thing to do I even have spare cases for my projects!) struck, producing The Uni Video Rewound, which goes back over the raw footage from the first two videos, extracting things which were left out for one reason or another, but still give a laugh or two. On one hand you could say it is out of desperation, while on the other its further opportunity to experiment with editing techniques, which is what I have been doing. Each Uni Video seems to have a very different aesthetic to the next one despite them all being broken down into segments. This second disc project allowed me to bring my editing to greater heights, to make a much more deep and frenetic display of all the random footage I have gathered over the past year or so to date, in my quest (of sorts) to document the modern way of University life. Thats how I like to see it on the highest plane, on the lowest plane they act as complicated and flashy home videos of Uni life, as well as a place for me to experiment to my hearts content. The Uni Video Rewound and this fourth instalment in the Uni Video saga are examples of my editing technique at its best so far anyway. I have come to model my Uni Videos, not in terms of content or otherwise, but in terms of technical advancement; to Bam Margeras CKY videos. The first was quite rough and ready, but the seed of what would later come was there. The second was a tighter edit and generally well constructed, but it was still quite rough around the edges. By the third video, there was a huge leap forward in style and technique (CKY3 is also possibly the best CKY video ever, in my humble opinion). Then with the latest (and greatest as the sub-title states) video, the style and techniques used have reached their peak, yet the content is an issue. In CKY4 Bam found himself too busy to really make a top notch video, and so relied on revisiting old footage we had already seen in previous videos (simply layering a black and white filter over the footage in Adobe or whatever and calling it 16mm does not cut the mustard!). Again, Im not comparing my Uni Videos to Bams CKY films in terms of content, but in terms of style and technique. |
