BACK TO PROJECTS
This was simply a quick half hour experiment that I decided to do. In it I explored using very dark, high contrast black and white footage, editing against the tempo of the music as well as cutting from a slow event to a fast event. The piece of music I used was �This Is Your Life� by The Dust Brothers (who created the entire soundtrack � bar one song) for David Fincher�s film. This track uses a series of quotes Brad Pitt�s character (Tyler Durden) utters throughout the movie. It was interested to use the track with Tyler prophesising certain things and setting it against a sequence in the film in which Tyler is again on a rant about �movie stars and rock Gods� etc. Tyler�s words coming from his mouth � but not matching his lip movements. It kind of fits nicely too, with the film�s theme of not being exactly who you think you are. But a key point in this little experiment was to work with really dark footage. I love the idea of high contrast, extremely dark film (obviously I�m a bit of a Film Noir fan) and was inspired by David Fincher�s discussion of both �Se7en� and �Fight Club� whereby he wanted to make the black in the frame match the black in the widescreen bars � I took this notion a little further, with a little inspiration from the likes of David Lynch�s �Eraserhead� (a film that took me 3 months to watch because it freaked me out so much) and John Huston�s �The Maltese Falcon�.
