Caring Kids

This short film for
BBC Local TV was organised by James Clarke and I was again put in charge of gathering and then editing the footage. The film focuses on an after school group called Hereford Young Carers, an organisation set up to provide activities and time out for children who care for siblings and/or parents who are ill. During school holidays they get to go on trips camping etc but during term time they are able to all meet and play videogames, football, pool or just hang out and chill with their mates. We interviewed several of the kids (of varying ages) who were part of the group, as well as one of the organisers. This was a prime example of the invaluable experience you can gain whilst working on a project such as BBC Local TV. Here we were dealing with kids but kids of all ages and backgrounds a room full of very different attitudes. It was quite a hectic shoot and had to be done quickly (the meeting that night only went on for two hours), so we had to swiftly interview several participants and relay the best way to be an interviewee so that they could understand. Incorporate the question into the answer for example. Another way to help the kids warm up to us was to get them involved with the shoot itself keep an ear on the sound with the headphones, hold the microphone or ask some questions. Obviously we need to keep control over it and were there to get the footage we need and keep a certain level of visual professionalism, but in order to work with such a variety of kids in such a short space of time, getting them involved was a quick way to meet them half way plus they enjoyed themselves once they got used to us, so everybody was happy.
