AC/DC Bag

The first song in the epic tale of Phish's original genre, AC/DC Bag. Written by Trey, it was first played on April 1st, 1986. This was at the Festival of Fools at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont. The record number of times it was played until the "BIG BREAK" was 216, a noble number. The inspiration for this song came from the Gamehenge saga, where it is to be sung from Wilson's point of view. Apparently, the "AC/DC Bag" is the electronic executioner that is the death sentence Wilson puts on his accountant, Mr. Palmer.
Being one of the top showpieces of the band, AC/DC Bag has loads of space to create jams in. It has evolved a good deal over the last 14 or 15 years. In the beginning of its life, it ended with a fade-out jam. It has also been delivered at a faster pace than in the -80s. As time drifted into 1996, Phish changed from the fade-out jam to end the piece into a more connecting piece that would fit a jam, like Bathtub-Gin for example.

Mr. Palmer is concerned with the thousand dollar question
Just like Roger he's a crazy little kid
I've got the time if you've got the inclination
So cheer up Palmer, you'll soon be dead

The noose is hanging, at least you won't die wondering
Sit up and take notice Tell it like it is
If I were near you I wouldn't be far from you
I've got a feeling you know what you did

chorus:

AC/DC Bag
AC/DC Bag
AC/DC Bag
DC Bag
(2x)

Time to put your money where your mouth is
Put 'em in a field and let 'em fight it out
I'm running so fast my feet don't touch the ground
I'm a stranger here I'm going down

Let's get down to the nitty gritty
Let's get this show on the road
I'll show you mine if you show me yours
I'm breathing hard - open the door

[chorus]

Brain dead, and made of money
No future at all
Pull down the blinds and run for cover
No future at all

Who would've thought it, that's where I am
No future at all
Don't sweat it, that's where I am
Whoa, carry me down, down, down, down
