To make up for the complex conceptual pieces from "Rift," Phish took the responsibilty to make a more lyrical album in 1994. The goal of "Hoist" was to bring out more simplistic and well-rounded compositions. As encouraged by friends, Phish aimed to make an album with not as much emphasis on their live music style.
Recorded at the American Recording Company in Woodland Hills, California, "Hoist" took off in the October of 1993. It was finally released by Elektra Records at the end of March in 1994. From this album came the radio singles "Down with Disease" and "Sample in a Jar." "Down with Disease" also has a video.
As soon as popularity arose with Phish (and it did happen after Rift), the urge to enter stardom in Hollywood also arose. Phish definately took advantage of their popularity, and therefore became part of a photoshoot. The pictures from the shoot were added to the "Hoist" CD material.
Humorously, the album was almost called "Hung Like A Horse," instead of "Hoist."
Hoist has a long list of assisting musicians. With Phish was the help of:
Ricky Grundy Chorale, Tower of Power Horn Section, Alison Krauss, Morgan Fitcher, Rose Stone and Jean McClain, Bela Fleck, The Richard Green Fourteen, and the Ster Trek Legend Jonathen Frakes.
