Haunted
by J. Estelle Newlin

Doomed forever,
Caught in the house she once adored.
It has become her prison,
Held up by every nail and board.

She faded so very young,
Misled by her human feelings.
She felt her despair and embraced it to soon,
And then it seemed it was her life it was stealing.

She wasted away, and awoke in her cell,
Wonderig where were the pearly gates?
She watched them all mourn,
It tortured her so to see them in such a state.

She saw him cry and carry on,
Refusing to release one of her dresses.
She watched him look for her around every corner,
Caught in her loss, his soul in arrest.

He got older,
And she stayed the same, watching him age everyday.
He could never love again,
And she often heard how he wished that she would have stayed.

One day death claimed him,
And then she was alone in that dark, empty house.
No one returned,
And soon her company became made of a spider and mouse.

Her prison collapsed around her,
But she was bound to this spot where she let her happiness fade.
She could never leave that ruin,
Forever walking that spot where their love was once made.

Time could never touch her,
And now she was forever undaunted,
Her lesson rang out,
Not only the living are the ones who are haunted.
