The History of the Deadly Crankdogs

The Deadly Crankdogs are Mark Payne-bass, Jon "JC" Coggins-drums and vocals, Dick Childs- guitar and vocals, Raoul Congola- congas, percussion, and vocals, Eddie Sayers- sound technician, Scott Hill- guitar and vocals, and Rusty Jollie-guitar.

The Deadly Crankdogs play classic rock & roll songs by artists like The Grateful Dead, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Allman Brothers Band, Van Morrison, The Who, The Doors, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tom Petty, Lou Reed, and many others. Since these legendary artists can't perform often enough for many of us, perhaps they won't mind if we borrow their music occasionally.

The Deadly Crankdogs were formed in 1977 by a group of Clemson University students. The band was originally named Dick Childs' Guitar Army in tribute to their four guitar players plus a bass guitar player. Their first public performance was at the 1977 Spring Fling at the Clemson University Student Union Night Club, Edgar's, where the band played on many occasions throughout the late 1970's.

After the departure of four of the original seven band members, the remaining three recruited replacement performers in order to continue to perform. With the new players on board, they chose the name Deadly Crankdogs, a name given to a group of carpenters widely known throughout the area for cranking out condominiums at a fast pace.

The Deadly Crankdogs have performed at many venues and functions throughout South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina, including Clemson's Spitoono festival, an annual outdoor three day music festival featuring area bands with proceeds going to various local charities.
