THE USA sensationally dumped their neighbours Mexico out of the World Cup - after comfortably beating them 2-0 in Jeonju this afternoon.
Mexico were the better side for the first five minutes, and the ball was rarely out of the Americans' half.
But on eight minutes, Sunderland’s Claudio Reyna broke away down the right side. He fired a delightful cross into the Mexican penalty area, where Josh Wolff flicked it on to Brian McBride, who volleyed a spectacular shot past Oscar Perez in the Mexican goal.
The goal shocked the Mexicans and ruined their rhythm. Even the early introduction of Luis Hernandez for Ramon Morales couldn’t relight the Mexicans' blue touch paper.
One of the stars of the USA side, Landon Donovan, headed the USA two goals ahead, to quell any hopes the Mexicans of exacting revenge over Germany for their second round defeat four years ago.
Another great cross from Eddie Lewis on 65 was latched on to by Donovan, who successfully guided it between Perez and the near post.
As soon as the Americans scored their second goal, Mexico became frustrated and their discipline went right out of the window.
The inevitable red card was shown to acting captain Rafael Marquez three minutes from time, for a shocking challenge on substitute Cobi Jones.
