SOUTH KOREA 0-0 SPAIN (KOREA WIN 5-4 ON PENS)

Ahn Jung-Hwan celebrates with manager Guus HiddinkSOUTH KOREA moved their achievements a further notch up the scale of improbability by reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup  - after a 0-0 draw in Gwangju.

20-year-old Spanish winger Joaquin - who had been struggling with a groin injury towards the end of extra-time - stepped up to take the all-important fourth penalty, and saw his less-than-convincing effort saved by Lee Woon-Jae.

But Korea - who had missed both their spot-kicks during open play in the tournament so far, showed nerves of steel as captain Hong Mjung-Bo converted past Iker Casillas to book a semi-final with Germany next Tuesday.

Neither side created a multitude of chances during the 120 minutes, but Spain - missing the threat of injured striker Raul - came closest in extra-time when Fernando Morientes hit the post with a hooked volley, and then saw a header ruled out when the ball had harshly been flaged out of play.

Ruben Baraja had also seen a 50th-minute header ruled out for pushing by Morientes, and had to be restrained from the referee as frustration sank in after the shoot-out drama.

Hwang Sun-Hong, Park Ji-Sung, Seol Ki-Hyeon and Ahn Jung-Hwan had successfully converted for Korea before Joaquin's decisive miss, while Fernando Hierro, Ruben Baraja and Xavi were on target for Spain.
