Quinton Fortunes injury-time penalty salvaged a point for South Africa. Roque Santa Cruz had headed Paraguay in front from Francisco Arce's free-kick and Arce fired a magnificent second directly from a free-kick.

South Afirca had offered little but got back into it when Estanisloa Struway deflected home Teboho Mokoena's shot.

Ricardo Tavarelli then pulled down Sibusiso Zuma and Fortune fired home the resultant spot-kick.

 

SPAIN 3-1 SLOVENIA

Spain were always on top as they won their opening match in the finals for the first time in 52 years.

Raul slid home the first following a surging run from Luis Enrique. Jaun Carlos Valeron converted the second after he was picked out by a superb curling pass from Javi De Pedro.

Substitute Sebastian Cimirotic gave Slovenia hope after a neat one-two but Fernando Hierro was fouled
