The Dewayn Brothers

While the Dewayn Brothers have been touring the country nearly constantly, the status of the band’s jam-rock alter ego Loco Macheen has been up in the air.

“We haven’t even talked about Loco. After we did last year’s Hallo-cheen, it was the last show we pretty much left it there,” said Garret Briggeman, “It was just more feasible to do the Dewayn Brothers and its doing good. With as much as we were touring it was too hard to bring in new people.”

Their drummer Nick Newhouse left the band to persue other interests and Brian Patterson, the bands keyboards, synth player, moved to Minneapolis shortly after Loco’s last show.

“Brian was such an integral part of a lot of the arrangements of those songs,” said Garret Briggeman, “He was a vital part of that band from when he first started. We built a lot of songs around the keyboards.”

The band has since been unable to permanently fill the two positions.

“I’d say the keyboard was a harder position for us to fill,” said Eric “Boy” Nelson. “We rehearsed a couple of drummers, a couple of them we’re really great drummers, but finding someone who could play keyboard like Brian could and to have those ideas. His background really influenced what Loco did.”

The members of the Dewayn Brothers have been making their living by playing shows since December of 2006.
“Everybody on the Dewayn Brothers is already touring full time and living that way ” said Garret Briggeman, “Its hard to find people who’s willing to put that into something.”

Although the band aren’t totally ruling out a revival of Loco Macheen, it would require some talented musicians to step up and fill the shoes of Patterson and Newhouse. The new members would also have to be willing to go on the road full time with the band.

“It takes a big level of commitment,” said Jaime Briggeman. “It’s a hard way to live, its fun, but its definitely hard.”

The Dewayn Brothers will be performing a tribute to Kirk Rundstrom on Oct. 27th, 10 p.m. at Josie's to celebrate his life and music as well as the anniversary of Loco Macheen’s first performance.

Anything But Ludo

Emporia has many great bands play here and two of those bands who've graced our town are Kansas City's Anything But Joey and St.Louis's Ludo. Ludo has signed with Island records and will be releasing their newest album in October. Anything But Joey retired in 2004 but has gotten together this year to play a few shows and have some fun. And fun they will have when they share the same stage with Ludo since 2003! They will be playing at the Granada in Lawrence, Kansas on Saturday, September 15.

Succumb to Evil

-stacie schmidt
After years of playing in bands, Doug Stormont has ventured out on his own. Stormont, under the moniker Evil Love Drones, is about to release his debut album totally electronically, "I plan to package it as a compressed file on
evillovedrones.com, along with artwork and all the stuff you would usually get with a store bought cd. I won't charge for this first one, the only catch is a required registration for download and a strict oath to not resale or I stake claim to your eternal soul, thus the "evil" in EvilLoveDrones. If I find a label willing and able, I'll give them the tunes to distribute." Overflowing with ideas and no outlets, Stormont has had to rely on himself instead of bandmates this time around. Evillovedrones is hoping to play live this fall and will probably consist of Stormont on drums and controlling synths, pc's, percussion, and lead vocals alongside Matt Lang on guitar and vocals.

Clay Hughes Comes Home

--stacie schmidt
Clay Hughes returns to Emporia! Hughes has been busier than normal this summer; and that's hard to believe!
"The process has been crazy. I have so many different ideas and music interests that I don't mind. My head is
usaully all over the place when I write music...so, I will start writing a song and usually know within the first few lines which direction it is taking." While touring the country in support of his current album "Good is Gone", he is also rerecording it with Ha Ha Tonka's Lennon Bone on drums.
His most memorable collaborations include Ha Ha Tonka (formerly Amsterband) because they are an amazing band and all around great guys, along with Jabee of the Lovely Vanderbilt because it's awesome to see how acoustic and hip-hop can meld together so well. Hughes is returning back to Kansas after much time spent
in California. "I love the west coast!!! Everytime I go out there I meet amazing people and new musicians. On my last trip out there I had the opportunity to meet Gavin Degraw and talk music for about half an hour. I will be shooting a music video on my next trip out there in September." His newest band is Kansas City's hip/hop, rock and blues Tide House and their myspace is myspace.com/tidehouse. As if that isn't enough, Hughes is also finishing up the Lovely Vanderbilt's album with Emcee Jabee, and has talked with a promoter in New Zealand about touring in Australia.

 M-Theory

M-Theory Keeps the Metal Moving

Emporia's own M-Theory has been struggling to record their debut CD, but they are now starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The last new months have brought on new songs, along with a new member. Rythym/lead guitar Matt Eller has come into M-Theory bringing a style the band perceives as Iron Maiden(?) and Pantera-esk. The band are preparing themselves with the new addition "comes faster heavier more brutal songs". They are working on having nine new songs done by the end of the summer providing a "tighter, heavier, more melodic product".
Bassist Aaron wrote their most recent, "Night Of The Long Knives" with lyrics describing the events leading up to Hitler taking over the German rule: Jerrod wrote, "The chorus to the song goes from Hitlers aspect of thinking and states 'All those who lied, they need to die, for me to rise, night of the long knives'". Another work in progress, "Encaged", is an original M-Theory song (wrote with Jace Grennell on guitar) and tells the story of a lion which is what Jerrod compares Eller to: his guitar riffs perfect and wild but sophisticated like a lion. Sounds like Eller is going to fit right into M-Theory's live presence they bring to the stage, and to the creativity this band possesses with their music. Their summer plans are building by the minute, and be sure to not miss a show, and pick yourself up one of their new shirts!
MTheory's upcoming shows in Emporia:
June 23rd - with Godzai (Topeka) and Liquid Agression (K.C.) @ Josies 10pm
July 18 - with Portrait of Malice @ Live in the Lot 7pm
July 28 - with At the Left Hand of God and Decimation @ Josies 10pm
August 18th - with Hate Made Easy @ Wagon Wheel

 The People's Punk Band_http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q259/deadendemporia/PPBdewayn002.jpg

Shut Up and Shop Emporia First!

Old school punk rock has never sounded sweeter than with the new 5 piece line up/reunion of People's Punk Band. Matt Lexow and Matt Kosinski joined Tim Mohn, Andy Houchins, and Jimmy Kegin to round out the most talented band Emporia has seen yet. As bold a statement that is, if you don't agree, then you haven't seen their live show. Their debut at Josie's proved that mosh pits are very much still alive in Emporia. PPB has also entered the world of myspace (myspace.com/thepeoplespunkband). Through their myspace, they write: "We are committed to two ends: writing and performing great songs; and, expressing our political and ideological views." They are currently working on 12 tracks for a full length cd. 3 songs are also previewed on their myspace, but do yourself a favor - go see their live show!!

Eric Murphy Solo Act Continues on Album

by Stacie Schmidt
Rumor had it that local musician and soloist performer Eric Murphy was forming a full band. Those days are gone, and Murphy is on the fast track to recording a cd. This cd will feature songs he wrote as far back as age 13. "I've had a lot of songs that I either haven't performed, recorded, or even finished. I kind of feel like I should wrap up all the old stuff before I try anything new," Murpy said.
He's decided to record at home with the same model tape recording machine that Bruce Springsteen used to make Nebraska. "I decided to work at home because I usually tense up in the studio and the performances suffer from it. All of the recordings that I've done so far that I actually like are "demos" I've done at home, so I figure I might as well stay where I'm comfortable. Matt Kosinski (ex-Gil, Peoples Punk Band) can then transfer the recordings from tape to digital to sparkle it up a little."
Murphy might not be forming a band, but many local musicians have joined him on stage, and he's returned the favor. He's hoping a handful of local musicians will also be able to contribute to his summer planned release. Also keeping it local, he hopes to add Emporia State graduate graphic designer Adam Jones's artwork to the cd.
Murphy's unique style and creativeness is sure to shine through his debut cd. Murphy offers, "It will be a tiny little record. For sleeping and rainy days."

ESU Battle of the Bands interviews

Random Artist

Rob Grizzle (Guitar, vocals)

How do you approach a battle of the bands differently than you do a regular show?

"I think the only difference between this show and any other show we would play will be the crowd and atmosphere i.e. we normally just play in front of a bunch of drunks in small, crowded bars. Nobody is there to criticize or care much at all for that matter about how we sound. This will be a little different in that aspect but we'll still play with the same great energy that we always do.

We pride ourselves in being a sort of "all encompassing" band. That's where the name "Random Artist" came from. Our musical style can be so diverse--from blues, to country, to heavy metal, to funk--and you don't really get to see that much around here. We try to stick to crowd favorites with a few originals. Our sound is huge for how small a group we are, and we have an exceptional amount of talent and musical experience between the three of us.

Like I said before, we try to always keep the energy level through the roof. We love to play what a crowd wants to hear. We're a solid group and nobody who comes to listen will be disappointed."

Brian Fuller (Drums)

How do you approach a battle of the bands differently than you do a regular show?

" I don't think we'll handle the competition any differently then a regular gig. whenever, we play we give it all we got. we got nuts and that's how we will approach this particular gig, too. What sets us apart is the diversity of our set list. We play so much different music. From The Eagles to ACDC to Death Metal to Jimi Hendrix. Also, what sets us apart is the fact that we are showmen. We will put on an amazing show."

Space for Rent

myspace.com/space4rent101

Joel Austin (Vocals, guitar)

How do you feel about the rules against lip-synching?

"I think that it's a really good rule because lip synching is not part of being in a band. A battle of the bands is a live competition and if your band can't do a good live performance and would have to use pre recorded material then you shouldn't be allowed to compete."

How do you approach a battle of the bands differently than you do a regular show?

"We take the time limit and pick our 2 or 3 songs that will fill it and practice those songs harder than any others in practices. Other than that just go with it and hope that we do well, or better than the bands that are competing against us. But in all reality we haven't prepared for this one at all, we've just been playing and having fun."

Albert Taylor Hall is very different than a bar, how do you adjust from venue to venue? Do you do anything different?

"We really don't do much going from venue to venue, I figure people show up to listen to the music so if we can get to the point of being able to blow people away then it doesn't matter where we're at, all that matters is the music. Now all that we have to do is get to that point =)."

Do you have anything you'd like to say to the other bands?

"To the other bands we would like to wish the best of luck and express our gratitude to all of the other bands competing because without them, the music scene in Emporia would in fact die and then we wouldn't have a home so without all of the other bands there wouldn't be much here and for that we say thanks."

healmejohnredcorn

myspace.com/healmejohnredcorn

Rian Roland (drums, vocals)

How do you feel about the rules against lip-synching?

"Despite lip-synchings' ultra baddassery ability to boost your vocals to an awesome level such as Ashlee Simpson, it is kind of cheating, and this is like a contest or something, and I don't think we're allowed to cheat."

How do you approach a battle of the bands differently than you do a regular show?

"Sure we take a different approach. We're really just going to tone down our live show for this one. We're going to focus on the musical performance and the technical details of our music while also honing in on the audience to deliver the ultimate breathtaking, unforgettable john redcorn experience."

Albert Taylor Hall is very different than a bar, how do you adjust from venue to venue? Do you do anything different?

"We're just going to play with less clothes, and more volume. adjusting from venue to venue... well john redcorn can pimp it just about anywhere. For example; In his trailer, in his jeep wrangler, in the Gribble's dining room, Albert Taylor Hall. It's a tough call, if it comes down to it I guess we'll just have to buckle down and play an acoustic set."

Do you have anything you'd like to say to the other bands?

"Well I know we would all like to wish all of the bands good luck, and we can't wait to hang out with you cul dudes, knock back some tall boys and play a damn ass show for a bunch of people that probably generally think we are really really horrible and suck."

Maniac Spree

myspace.com/maniacspree

Zach Janice (guitar)

How do you feel about the rules against lip-synching?
"Lip-synching is a rare art form that has been mastered by the greats such as, Milli Vanilli. Need I say more? Playing/Singing live has a different impact than mimicking a recording."
How do you approach a battle of the bands differently than you do a regular show?
"A regular show we do the set like everything is going to flow together. For this show we are going to mix it up as much as we can in twelve minutes. Billy Corgan said it best, "If it's heavy all the time then its not heavy at all."

Albert Taylor Hall is very different than a bar, how do you adjust from venue to venue? Do you do anything different?
"We don't mic up very much (less chance of mixups), so its more about being mentally prepared. We usally have a cleansing with sage, and drink green tea while keeping our pinkies pointed up at all times. Were hardcore! Ha Ha Ha"

Do you have anything you'd like to say to the other bands?
"What better way than to celebrate Wednesday with a battle and a beer! We should hang out afterwards. Good Luck!"

Elly Bacher to play Inner Bean

"I want my music to have a positive impact on the people that hear it, or at least have some relatability in it. I know that I have a hope greater than myself, so when I am feeling negative, I have a foundation on which to base my life and trust that things will be okay, and I think that can be seen in my music." Elly plays with Hans Widener Feb 7th at 8pm and its free. myspace.com/ellybacher
