Potions

Unit Three
The Craft of Potion Making

For the past month we have been studying the craft of potion making. I have taught you the basics of creating your own potions,
preparing a potion, several ingredients and their uses, combination of ingredients and writing your own instructions.
So today will be a day of review!

When creating and designing your own potions you must consider
the following things:

1. Your ingredients! They must work well together, support one
another and benefit each other. Example;
Eye of newt which is used mainly for relaxation and leeches whos uses
include regeneration, would NOT work well together! It's obvious why,
the properties of eye of newt will be disbalanced by
the properties of leeches. They do not benefit one another
instead they ,.contradict each other. Make a potion such as that and not
only will it be useless you will fail my class.
2. Brewing. You must let certain ingredients brew longer then others
so they become part of the potion and give it its properties and effects.
3. Addition. When is a good time to put in the other ingredients. Make
sure that what you have been brewing up so far is finished
combining and new properties may be added without destroying your potion and causing a bad reaction.

These are the most basic guidelines for brewing up your own potions.
Logic and sense are also needed but many of you are lacking in
that field so I sujest you follow these notes closely.

Preparing a potion:

1.Follow the written directionx! You must pay close attention
to what the recipe is asking of you. Note small things like which
way to stir, how long to let it brew and at what times to add in the
other ingredients. If you follow the directions I asure you that
your potions will be successful
2. Keep your materials clean. Keep each ingredient in a jar with
the same ingredients. Never put two different herbs in the
same jar! This way you contaminate it and it will become useless.
Always clean your cauldrons after and before brewing potions.
You do not want any resdue of other potions left in there
once you begin on a new one. Make sure there are no cracks and
all your tools are in mint condition.

Ingredients:

While I do not have the time or room to re-write all the ingredients we
have studied so far, please remember and look back at your notes.
Do not forget proper spelling, properties and other features of
the ingredient. Example;
Beladona - love - black berries.
That will be unacceptable! I want the EXACT properties and features,
any spelling mistakes will lose you 2 points.
This is what is should be;
Belladonna - desire, lust, seduction - Green leafed herb with small
black berries, usually grows as a bush.

Combination of ingredients:

Ingredients must be able to function together. Meaning that their
properties should either be similar or would heighten and strengthen
one another. Example;
Leeches (relaxation) and Cardamom (stress and fatigue reliever).
One benefits the other. Leeches would cause relaxation and
Cardamom would relieve you of any burden making your rest
even better. Again please refer to your notes for further information.

Writing your own instruction:

Is basically like reading instructions. You must remember the exact
same points. Write it in a chronological order. Be sure to add in
when each ingredient goes in and how much of each ingredient,
how long you have to wait to brew or until adding another
ingredient, which way to stir, and other information such as color,
smell, thickness and etc.

I have given you the basics but strongly suggest that you look back
onto your notes
for they will have detailed information
on each. We will cover all of this on your NEWTs. So be prepared I do not
tolerate any mistakes and anything less then perfection.

Potions Assignment:
potion making

This assignment will test how well you understand our lessons so far.
Your goal is to come up with your own potion. It may serve any
purpose that triggers your fancy. I want it written out like in
any potions book. Meaning there will be a collum of
ingredients, instructions, how it works, and a theory.
Attatched to your report I want a revised sheet of potion
ingredients and we have covered, their uses and any extras
you want to add.
This is due in a week (July 12th)
I expect at least 6 rolls of parchment (two pages).
If you do not complete do not bother coming to class.
Below I have provided a sample and idea of the finished product.

Love Potion

Ingredients Uses
Veela Hair Strong infatuation
Lilac Gentleness, caring
Rose Love, Longing
Dragon Blood Sexuality and love
Belladonna Desire,Lust,Seduction
A piece of you Allows drinker to distinguish who to love

Instructions

1. Your first step should be instructions on which temperature to set your cauldron on, which
ingredients will be going in first and approximately how long this will take.

2. Being by putting in your first ingredient. Include how long you have to wait before the first step,
how much should be added, which direction to be stirred and if any changes such as smell would occur.

However many steps you have from then depend on your potion and should be similar in information.
Your final and last step should include how much longer it needs to be left, scent, color, taste (if
that is possible) and anything else.

How it works

Write at least a paragraph or two about what the drinker would feel when taking this potion. What
are the common effects, changes and behavior. What to expect from the person who has taken
this potion. How long it will last, if there are any side effects.

Theory

Why does this work? Do the properties of each ingredient strengthen and benefit one another. How do
they do that? Why did you pick these ingredients? State your reasoning and any other notes while
concocting the potion.

Ingredients

Attach a good copy of all ingredients studied. I want it neat, organized and correct to the last dot.

You are Dismissed!
Tomorow we begin a new unit. Be prepared!
