Dead Angelica Version 20 *-* You Ripped My Heart Out Of Me, Then You Put It Back

Good Charlotte (30th June 2003)

Well, I'd booked my tickets for the gig a long time ago, so as you can imagine I was pretty excited. My mum was going to take me and five friends- Elli, Helen, Kate H, Mara and Addy. She wouldn't let us skip school, so as soon as that 4:00 bell rang we ran for the locker rooms, changed, and we all dashed down to the train station. Elli doesn't go to my school so I had to wait a nerve-racking half-hour for her train to arrive at Wimbledon Station. There was then a bit of a kerfuffle as she was on the Waterloo train and we weren't, but eventually we all wound up at Waterloo Station and caught a Northern Line tube to Tottenham Court Station. We saw the Astoria and we were like, "Where's the queue?" until we caught sight of it.
So we waited... and waited... and waited. I was quite surprised- I expected there to be loads of little teenie girls, but everyone looked kinda punk (and a little scary to my innocent eyes). Furthermore, there were a fair few guys, although most of them seemed to have come with girlfriends. Finally, after an hour, the doors opened. We got in fairly quickly, and sent my mum upstairs to the sitting area with our bags. Then we stood around for what seemed like ages (at this point, I realised that I'd forgotten my camera, but I didn't want to go and get it off my mum for fear of losing my place. With hindsight, I could have gotten back in again easily, but...) until finally...

The Business
The Business were actually way better than I expected. Before, I'd gone onto
their website and looked on their 'Downloads' section. I listened to one song and really didn't like it. Then when Kate H came over, she clicked on another song to listen to, which was better than the one I selected!! Anyway, they sounded pretty good live even though I didn't understand half of what they were going on about (the crowd seemed to, though, and laughed and cheered). They told everyone to make circle pits (which is when people basically run around in a circle manically). I was like, "Nooooooo!!" (remembering the horrors of the Less Than Jake moshpit/circles), but actually it was quite good as every time a circle pit started near me I automatically got room to breathe.
There was one song I really liked, called 'Smash the Disco'. In total, though, I think they were a little too London punk for me, I'm more into poppunk (is that a word?). So eventually, after telling us all to be nice in the moshpit and pick people up if they fell over, they went off stage.

So we waited around a little more. A few observations on the Astoria:

  • It was way smaller than I'd expected. Only 2000 people.
  • It was hot.
  • It was dark.
  • It was quite intimate, which is different from being small.
  • There were too many sweaty guys!! Eugh.
  • I do not appreciate beer being thrown at me.
  • Nor do I appreciate cigarette smoke in my face.

    Good Charlotte
Suddenly the lights dimmed... I felt massively excited, having waited a year and a half. I grabbed Elli's hand as we heard the opening chords of A New Beginning. Chris walked on, then Billy, Benji and Paul. Elli screamed something about Joel at me, and I thought she said, "He's on stage!", whereupon I began to panic as I couldn't see him and I was like, "I must be going blind!" However, he then walked on and Elli later told me that she said, "Where's Joel?" But anyway...
Oh. My. God. I know I keep saying that and I sound really teenie, but give me a break. GC are my favourite band, have been for a year, and this was only the second gig I've ever been to (the first being Reading Festival), plus I was only about eight rows from the front and... *breathes*. Look, it was exciting, OK?! But I have to say, I think I behaved quite well as I didn't scream until I actually saw them on stage, seeing as I always make fun of people who scream for no reason.
I can't remember the exact setlist, but they did play these songs: A New Beginning, The Anthem, Wondering (before Wondering, Joel asked "How many people here have dogs?" and everyone laughed, then the opening chords of Wondering started and we all got it. Very funny), Say Anything, Hold On, Festival Song, East Coast Anthem, Little Things, Waldorf Worldwide (renamed London Worldwide), The Story of My Old Man, Girls and Boys, My Bloody Valentine, Movin' On, The Young and the Hopeless, the Day that I Die, Riot Girl, and they finished off with Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous. They also played an Oasis cover but I can't remember the name. They didn't play Seasons, my second favourite song after Waldorf Worldwide; so I was a bit disappointed but never mind.
I was quite surprised at how moshable (word?) they were. People even moshed to Hold On. I have decided that even though moshpits are hot, sweaty (eugh factor 9 outta 10), uncomfortable painful, etc; they are actually really fun. I got really into it and mashed myself around and screamed the lyrics at the top of my voice- unfortunately I'm small and ended up nearer the back. This meant that I couldn't chuck my Snitch onto the stage (yeah, I bought them a Golden Snitch. Sad or what?!).
They were also quite funny- someone chucked a tie onto stage and Joel picked it up and wore it- then he said, "You know who else wears ties? Avril Lavigne!" (at which point Elli, the useless dolt, cheered. She does this all the time. She said Matt Bellamy looked like Gareth Gates, in the middle of a Muse crowd. Useless child. Oh, and Avril is a loose whore for suing GC about the Girls and Boys video.) Then he said something like, "Benji wears ties," and attempted to make Benji wear the tie, saying, "Benji needs a new style, dontcha, Benj? Stop copying Kelly Osbourne!" Eventually Billy took the tie and gave it to Chris. Joel also said that he loves London, and he always lies to people and says that he comes from London; whereupon he adopted a seriously dodgy Cockney accent and said, "I'm from London!" Benji also said that he walked along to Buckingham Palace and saw the Queen in her 'little yard' and 'made out with her'. Apparently it was 'awesome'. That was funny (no disrespec' to the Queen or nuffin'). So yeah. Although Joel did also say that when he was little he thought that English people were scary because of the things he saw in "movies, guys, I'm just going on the movies". Oh, and near the end Joel was like, "Usually at this point we'd walk off stage to hear you scream..." and then Benji cut in and said, "Yeah, that always makes me feel good!" and Joel finished off with, "But we respect you guys so we won't do that."
Joel had his new hair- black with a red fin. Benji wore a black beanie hat so I couldn't see his hair, but anyways. Billy was wearing a really wicked t-shirt, and I couldn't see Chris or Paul properly from where I was. Although I have to say, both Benj and Paul look a lot thinner in real life. Oh, and the Halo Friendlies were on the side of the stage. Benji or Joel, can't remember who, said something like, "I'd marry any one of those girls!" Elli reckons Joel is going out with the one named ...something, I don't remember.
Billy had his green guitar, the same one as in Girls and Boys. However, when they actually played Girls and Boys, he swapped it for a black one (Benji swapped his too, but I didn't see the colour). Benji had a cream guitar with stickers on, and Paul had a blue/green bass (I didn't see it, this is what Kate Hiley says).

Eventually (too early!), they played Lifestyles and the show ended. And now I'm depressed 'cos it's OVER. But damnnnnnnnnn they played a good show. I bought a poster outside to remember them with, and we all went home, ate noodles and fell fast asleep. The End.
