Benji got out of the car and looked around, shading his eyes. Callie saw him, and he looked so sweet and shy that she couldn't help the slight twinge her heart gave her. No. This had to stop; he couldn't keep taking her out after college like this. Benji was a nice guy- he didn't deserve to be messed around.
In fact, he was such a nice guy that Callie had no actual idea why she wanted to break it off. Her head felt so spinny all the time now, she couldn't think straight. If she wasn't sure, she explained to herself, then surely it was better to break it off now than face hurt later.
Callie looked down. She couldn't bear to see the hurt in Benji's eyes.
"But why?" he asked her. "Is this really what you want, Callie?"
Callie nodded, head still downbent. "I'm sorry, Benji."
Benji leant down, and for the first time ever he kissed Callie gently on the lips. Her heart exploded within her, shattering into a thousand pieces. She wanted to run after him and apologise, but as she knew she couldn't offer him what he really wanted, she just watched him walk out of the Butterfly Cafe into the pouring rain.
