America is a country comprised of many different nationalities and races. The contributions of these different people helped to make the United States the place it is today. To appreciate these different contributions there needs to be education and the education needs to be diverse. Diversity is something that some conservatives oppose due to a lack of tolerance and the desire to continue the cycle of ignorance in our country. If diversity became part of the curriculum in education there would be tolerance of different cultures and maybe an incorporation of some value that we have lost. Values like pride in our work, families and society, are things we have abandoned in recent years. We need to be proud on a regular basis as Americans and not only when we are at war killing others. The issue of diversity is difficult to those desiring to push Anglo superiority because it dispells their myth. There is no reason to oppose the teaching of other cultures and contributions in our society. If it is appropriate for children of color to learn about the Anglo version of history then it is appropriate for Anglo's to learn about people of color. Are conservatives afraid that little Johnny or Susie may come home with one of their friends of color or one day marry one? Are they afraid the the hate filled doctrine they have imposed on the children will be dismissed as just that? These individuals need to be put on the spot and stamped out, because we as a nation will never progress while dragging these social dead weights. America is strong enough to accept differences in the people that inhabit its boundaries. We see the the contributions of others in our daily lives in the food we eat to the language we speak, no one culture can lay claim to total domination of the American lifestyle. This being true, we should embrace our differences and celebrate them instead allowing the ignorant and fearful to hide them. |
