| The Libertarian party has members that advocate the legalization of all drugs in an effort in which they believe will lessen the demand and the cost. Legalizing drugs to take away the black market appeal and to reduce the cost thus reducing crime sounds like a great plan on paper and in a sound bite. In actuality I do not believe that legalizing drugs here in America would do anything but make more addicts of our citizens. Let us think about it, if someone used crack cocaine or heroine issued by the government does that mean that because the government iussed it that these people are now functional citizens? How so? A crack or a heroine addict do not make for functional and productive citizens. They are too busy looking for their next fix to be productive. I dont think I want my government stringing its citizens out on dope. The question that hasn't been addressed is "Who is going to pay for rehabilitating these citizens that the government is getting hooked"? I am sure that you the reader don;t want your tax dollars going to fund rehabilitation houses for these people. I am certain you wouldn't want your children to see the government run ads on television promoting the latest special on crack at the local store or billboards of people holding crack pipes. With all of the clamour about cigarettes and law suits in courts, what happens when citizens want to sue the government for getting them addicted? Who will foot the bill if that was allowed to occur? If it is good enough for the tobacco industry then it is good enough for the government because the government allowed citizens to sue that industry. I watched the Mayoral race for New York and watched as the Libertarian candidate constantly brought up the issue of legalizing marijauna use. He didn't help himself or his cause by sporting a long ponytail and looking like a hippie which most people associate as being lazy do-nothings. Libertarians need to focus on real issues when running for office and they should abandon the drug platform and stick to the issues on individual freedoms and self reliance. I think the Libertarian party stands on substance but the wrong substance is being promoted. |
