TrailBlazer Chrome Door Handle Install

Changing the door handles is a fairly easy task on the Chevy Trailblazer. GM has introduced a kit which consists of all four new door handles assemblies with a plasti-chrome handle and painted housing. This is a direct replacement part and a very nice upgrade if you have the stock Black handles. This is the only set of handles available for the Trailblazer / Envoy which are pre-painted. All other handles are paint to match. The only other "chrome" door handle kit available is a Polished Stainless Overlay kit which sticks onto the original handles, it will make the whole handle assembly appear chrome. The new GM kit comes with installation instructions and this guide is a visual supplement to show what is involved and how it will change the appearance of the Trailblazer. Total installation time is between 15-30 minutes per door.

The GM kits are available in the following colors:

Color Paint Code GM Part Number
Black 41U Part Number
Blue 22U Part Number
White 50U Part Number
Silver 67U 17802145

GM List price as of 5/10/06 is $200. I purchased my set through Greg Bass at Classic Chevrolet Wholesale Parts in Texas for $160 plus Shipping. You can contact them at 1-866-410-6140 or at www.nationalgmparts.com

Front Door Handles

Here are the Four new Door handles supplied in the GM kit. You will need to start by removing the front Door panel. First remove the trim piece from around the Inner door handle, and then remove the trim for the Buttons on the door and unplug the wires from underneath. There are two 10mm Bolts holding the panel to the door. After those are removed, you can pry the panel away from the door, it is held in place with several push clips along its outside edge. A panel popping tool would be helpful for this but is not necessary. After the panel is removed, the interior padding may be pulled away from the door in the door handle area, it is not necessary to remove the entire padding.

The door Handle mechanism has two rods attached to the Door Latch. They must be unclipped to remove the Handle assembly. The Door Lock rod is held in place with the Blue clip which is removed by rotating the clip off the Rod. The Door handle rod is held in place by the Yellow clip which can be unclipped by pulling on the tab.

Two 10mm Nuts hold the Door handle assembly to the door skin. The one on the outer edge of the door can be removed with a socket and extension. The inside one is blocked by the Window track assembly, but can be taken off using a box end wrench. It may be helpful to hold the door handle in place while the Nuts are undone. Once they are off, the door handle assembly can be removed by pulling it outwards and up.

Once the door handle is off, the Lock cylinder may be swapped onto the New door handle. It is held in place with the clip shown in the picture above. Once that is installed on the new handle, it can be re-installed into the door. Everything may be re-installed in the opposite order it was taken off.

Note : The New Passanger side door handle does not have a space for a Lock cylinder. It is necessary to remove the Door lock Rod from the Door Latch so it wont rattle inside of the door. This is held in place by a Pink grommet on the latch.

Rear Door Handles

Rear door panels are removed in the same way as the front, by first removing the trim piece around the handle, and the button for the window. The plastic cover inside the arm rest is removed with a flat blade screwdriver, where two 7mm Bolts may be taken out. The panel may then be removed from the door and insulation can be pulled back. The Handle rods are held on by the same Yellow clips to the Door Latch.

The Door handle assembly is held in place by only one 10mm Nut, and the Metal plate. Once the nut and Plate are removed, the handles will come off, and everything can be re-installed to finish the installation.

The Final product, a new set of Color Matched Door Handles with a Chrome accent to make the outside appearance much cleaner and compliment a set of polished or chrome wheels.
