NEWFOUND JAZZ
PAUL MURPHY
Paul Murphy is a 28-year-old percussionist from Topsail, Newfoundland and Labrador.  He has studied percussion under the direction of the late Don Wherry at Memorial University.  It is here that he is presently completing his final credit towards a B.Mus.  Paul has also studied Jazz, Classical and World music in Toronto.

At York University, he studied with
John Brownell, Glen Halls, Phil Dwyer, Don Thompson and Mike Murley.  He has experience playing in an abundance of small combo groups, including Rock, Jazz, Classical, Funk and various drum ensembles.

He has performed with groups like the
Scruncheon Percussion, Spirit of Newfoundland (Patsy Cline show, Arrival of the Matthew 1997), Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, North York Symphony Orchestra, Oakville Symphony Orchestra, Entrada Brass and small studio bands.

He also has a repertoire of experience in composing music for percussion and tap dance.  This has led to a professional relationship with dance studios such as the
Judy Knee Dance Studio, Toronto Dance Theatre and the Sheridan College Dance Theatre.

Aside from performance practice, Paul is also a private music teacher.  He has been working form home for the past ten years and has worked with community groups like the
Newfoundland Society for the Physically Disabled and The Easter Seals(These groups promoted musical participation despite physical challenges.)

Paul has worked as a road manager for the world-renowned percussion ensemble,
NEXUS.  He has toured all of the United States and most of Canada.
