| IN REMBRANCE OF... |
| I find it disgusting that some Canadians aren't willing to shell out a small donation to veterans for a poppy, to wear in remembrance of all the many men and women who gave their lives in two world wars so that we can enjoy the way of life we do today. This is nothing but cheapness and ignorance on their part. My parents were both veterans. My father served in the British Royal Navy in World War Two and Korea, and my mother was a radar operator stationed on the Isle of Wight during the Battle Of Britain. I was brought up learning about and respecting what people like my parents did during one of the darkest times in our history, and God bless them all for what they did. It seems, sadly, that many others don't know, or simply don't care. Next time they shell out a dollar or two for a lottery ticket, maybe they should think about giving that money to a veteran selling poppies instead. The thing I find most disgusting is that Remembrance Day is not a national holiday in Canada. Of all our national holidays, surely this should be one of the most important? Sadly, given this sort of attitude, it doesn't look likely to happen. We can have a "civic" holiday in August, but not one in November in respect of those who died for us. Our American neighbours respect their veterans and have a national holiday in their honour. I think we could learn something from them in this particular case. Thank you, Marty Murray Niagara Falls |
