GODDO
Doug Inglis, Gino Scarpelli, Greg Godovitz
While I regrettably missed Nigel Mack and Blues Attack (a blues-rock band currently on a cross-country tour) on Friday (Oct. 27/00) at The Silver Dollar, I did catch the Goddo experience at The Rio on Saturday.  As a "new" fan (I must have been hiding under a different kind of "rock" in Ottawa during their original heyday in Toronto, post-Fludd), I'm not surprised that they still retain a cult following after 25 years.  They are a dynamic team that works together splendidly!  I heard two particular songs that night  that have forever endeared me to them, called "Tough Times" (a ballad to rival "Dust in the Wind" any day) and "Quicksand" (with Greg's vocals and lyrics making it sound amazingly like a John Lennon composition).  An impromptu attempted striptease by an older male member of the audience during a version of "Little Red Rooster" and some guy who persisted in requesting very loudly that they "play Ritchie Blackmore" added a bit of extra humour to the evening!  These dudes deserve their own star on Canada's "Walk of Fame"!

A big thank-you to Dull Nullmeyer, who gave me a tape recording of this performance.

UPDATE

Greg Godovitz has recently (December/2000) launched his official autobiography,
Travels With My Amp.  I had previously purchased a copy of the draft manuscript of same and was greatly impressed with Greg's candour and dry wit in describing his own and his (current and former) bandmates' experiences (and misbehaviour) of life "on the road".  Be sure and check out what is sure to become a significant part of Canada's rock music history (especially if Greg ends up getting himself "crucified", which is not beyond the realm of possibility)!

Watch for various side projects in the form of the Anger Brothers (Greg, Doug, Bob Segarini, etc.), The Paul Fenton Band (Doug, Greg and Gino, occasionally), Pennyblack (Gino),  and Go, Freddy, Go, and The McBrides (Doug), among others.
