| Coldsweat's gig last night at Grossman's Tavern was an absolute delight! Not having previously attended at this historic blues venue, it was a double treat for me! Founded by veteran lead guitar wizard, Rob Tarticchio, and fronted by powerhouse vocalist, Anthony Salvatore, this vastly under-rated ensemble is determined to make a mark for itself in the Toronto blues-rock scene. With their current line-up of dynamic bandmates, Rob Randazzo (also playing with Red Shift), on the drumkit, and Gary Boudreau, on bass, I foresee a significant rise in their musical profile. At this particular gig, Tom Stephen, from the Jeff Healey Band, graciously accepted the band's offer to beat the skins on Freddy King's "Goin Down" and considering he is just recovering from a slipped disc, Tom performed admirably! I also spotted Leo Valvassori (formerly with Alannah Myles, as well as the Bottle Devils) in the club that evening, although he remained a part of the audience only. Anthony's vocal dynamics have improved tremendously in terms of moderating his "physical volume control" according to the size of the venue, but I still maintain that he needs a stadium to do full justice to his lungs! And speaking of not being able to contain one's enthusiasm, an extremely over-eager fan did nothing to improve his concentration on the job at hand, as she was virtually "in his face" throughout the last set of the evening. Half-joking pleas for "security" finally did the trick and she managed to behave herself for the last few songs. I am also quite impressed with Rob's skillful, rapid-fire lead guitar manoeuverings, especially on such tunes as Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Cold Shot" and "Pride and Joy", as well as the classic Booker T. Jones/William Bell's "Born Under a Bad Sign". I particularly enjoyed "Hard Luck Case" (Tommy Castro), even without the horn section! I'd like to see these talented players hosting a jam and hear the blend of music and magic that would ensue! The band is currently in the process of recording their debut CD, so watch for that one!
