(1ST ANNUAL
GREEN CABBAGE PARTY SUMMIT)
- MULTIVITAMINS
This Russian ex-patriot musical circus, and the physical epitome of musical insanity, was originally called Raspilil I Vibrosil (meaning Taken Apart and Thrown Away)!  Based in Chicago, the band reminds me of early Max Webster, Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention and the B-52s.  They cite their own influences as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Metallica, Nick Cave, anything melodic but not mellow, and any kind of polka.  Hey, theyd go great on a double bill with Peterboroughs The Silverhearts, another totally off-the-wall gang of performers!  Stranger still, a lot of the lyrics are in Spanish, as well as English and Russian!

Theyve somehow managed to incorporate every single genre of music from around the world into this collection of extremely bizarre, high-energy cacaphony of noise but simultaneously create an interesting (read never boring, never repetitive) and exciting musical experience Art Rock for the new millenium!  Unfortunately, I missed their live performance (with Kubzavod) at the Rivoli in Toronto in April but will definitely catch any return gigs in Canada!

The players on this CD are listed as Suvik (guitar), mufta (keys, violin, midi), Kino (bass), Nil (drums), and Dera (percussion), although on their previous releases (Golden Greatest Super Hits, HMR and moolti-poolti-djigi-djigi), they also list Sasha/Sanechka (the "noisy drums")  Eydelman, Sasha "ready to make guitar lovin'" Zvodinsky, Igor "the hippo" Vinokur, Ol'a/Olga Goncharova (violin) and Sandrik (saxophone).

If I were to choose a favourite track, although I enjoyed them all immensely, it would have to be Deep Purple a progressive tribute (satire?) to classic hard-rock bands.  Butterfly a beautiful melodic ballad, with lyrics in Russian, which morphs theatrically into a flamenco-type rock anthem, is also very appealing.

Its highly danceable too, especially if you have no idea how to dance and just want to release some physical energy in any way your body feels like moving!

Its the best new music Ive heard in at least a decade!  As the closer track tells us, Green cabbage party unites everyone!

As a post-script, theres an excellent sampler tune from moolti-poolti-djigi-djig on MP3.com called Santera-Luciferas-Cucurum-Pupurum, billed as a country-thrash love song absolutely wild!
