CD REVIEW

TO RETURN TO THE CD REVIEW INDEX,
I have admired the Atlanta-native Indigo Girls (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers) since I heard their self-titled first release in 1989.  Some of their subsequent releases have not meant as much to me as, say, Come On Now, Social or Rites of Passage, but this new release, Become You, is, in my opinion, one of their best in a very long time. Let's face it, even the most ardent fan rarely enjoys every song on a given CD and are happy to find two or three they like.  This was not the case with this Indigo Girls CD, which I thoroughly enjoy, no matter how often I play it.  From Amy Ray's opening line, "Well, I guess that I was lonely..." on "Moment of Forgiveness" to the
plaintive harmonies of "Nuevas Senoritas", this is a 100% enjoyable CD - a rare gem indeed!

Particularly touching is Emily Saliers' poignant tribute song to her recently deceased sister, Carrie, in "She's Saving Me".  One cannot help but enthusiastically sing along to the rollicking "Bitteroot", and there's something irresistible about "Collecting You", an obvious love song sure to become as much a live-performance favourite as their signature song, "Closer to Fine".  I daresay this fun, yet thought-provoking, release will soon turn into one of the most commercially successful of their endeavours of the last decade.  Ray and Saliers have obviously returned to their acoustic roots in a big way, and they are to be commended for their best compilation yet.  These girls rock
and they illustrate through this CD that they have far more substance and staying power than their earlier critics gave them credit for.  It's worth having in any fan's collection!
