TO RETURN TO THE CD REVIEW INDEX,
Wearing a Hugo Boss black suit and wielding the Gibson Gordie Johnson SGJ Signature Model Guitar Gordie Johnson has strolled off the streets of Torontos Queen St. and into the pages of Canadian rock folklore. Big Sugars 2 disc release parades the creative mix of blues, rock and reggae and Gordies supernatural axe skills which are behind the bands well deserved success. Giving fans the best of both worlds, the first disc (Hit) features fav Sugar tracks served up Greatest Hits style, with the second cd (Run) providing live versions of 11 songs.

Hit caresses listeners with well-known Sugar tracks like Sleep in Late, Diggin A Hole and the sensuous reggae flavoured Turn the Lights On. Trouble in The City is pure reggae, highlighting Mojah on vocals, and few fans can forget the rocking passion of Nicotina (Shes All That). Brief cd liner notes provide additional information on each song that fans will lap up with delight.

But if you have an affinity for passion disc #2 is what needs to be spinning in your player. Sugar is the quintessential live band and a flimsy disc cant reproduce the power and emotion of their show. However Run does an admirable job of trying to do just that, especially for those who havent experienced the band in person. Starting with Goodbye Train with its thumping bass lines, the disc moves through Skull Ring with an easy, long intro and into heavy-duty rock such as Im a Ram and the blues heavy Groundhog Day.

Hit and Run is the perfect disc for fans who want to recapture the intensity of the live Sugar experience, and have a collection of the bands hits, all in one place.
