| Caf Au Laits move to Wednesday night for their weekly jam with the ever-talented East-End Boys, Paul Martin, Des Leahy (absent that particular evening due to his prior commitment with Fresh Eire), Mark Yanetta, drummer Derek, and featuring Angel Marr, seems to have been a wise choice, as the joint was packed right up until last call. Members of Donna Marrs band (as well as Donna herself) sat in for a couple of funked-up tunes and Steve Martino even joined in on vocals for Everybody Must Get Stoned. And speaking of Fresh Eire, their house band gig at McVeighs is doing very well indeed! When I dropped in at that cozy venue (Church/Richmond) on Friday evening around 10:30, the place was already at near-capacity. The first person I saw when I entered the room was Johnny McGoldrick (formerly with Foreigner-tribute band, Dirty White Boys), who plays acoustic guitar, banjo and shares lead vocal duties with Pillars of Society frontman, Dan Williams, whom I first heard in Pillars of Society at Angel Marrs former venue, Full Moon. Dan also plays bodhran and tin whistle. Des, of course, plays acoustic guitar with an equal vengeance that he exacts when playing electric guitar. Last but certainly not least is Mike Boyle on one of my favourite instruments, mandolin (yes!), tenor banjo and who also lends his vocals. All four of these friendly and personable lads produced some wonderful harmonies on the rousing traditional Celtic tunes they played during the set I was there. I wish Id stayed for the last set, as that is when they probably played music of a more rock-oriented variety (from the likes of U2, Rolling Stones, Beatles, etc.). Next time I go it will be for the entire evening. By the way, Fresh Eire also has their debut CD, A Breath of available for purchase. |
