IT IS FINALLY JUNE!

Field Day 2005 is closing in on us, so contact Steve

at [email protected] about the details and any help you

may be able to offer.  Our next meeting on June 2 will

be mostly if not entirely devoted to Field Day

planning.  Make your plans to attend!

ARES UPDATE

We certainly enjoyed our Skywarn class and the grand tour

of the 911 EMA facilities.  We will definitely see the

skies in a different perspective from now on.  We look

forward to being of service to the Weather WX4PCH

facilities in the future.

Jan/kg4ppp & Fred/kg4ppq

Jim (K4LCP) and myself was able to give the 6 meters a

workout after the net on May 10th.  After making a few

minor adjustments things were under control.  Our test

also included an Amateur Radio Operator out of Toccoa.

ARES net has definitely found it's time slot:  TUESDAYS

at 7:30 pm.  As net control I've been opening the net a

few minutes early hoping to catch someone that might not

be able to check in right at 7:30.  Plus after the ARES

net is officially closed, I try to stick around hoping to

catch the late straggler.  These people will also be

included on the ARES check in log.  We're not big in

numbers yet, but we've managed to pick up people from

other counties.

If you have a chance to check in with other ARES nets,

let them know about our ARES net.

REPEATER UPDATE

Both repeaters are working great. This time of year there

very little interference from the tower lights during our

nets, so please check in and try to use our repeaters more.

The two meter range is better than our 73cm repeater during

the summer months, as tree leaves attenuate the 73cm

signals more. Of course it is always true that the higher

the frequency the more signals attenuate per mile. The 440

machine also does not have a pre-amp. installed to boost

the receive signals. I have been working on a satellite rig

to use field day, which requires a pre-amp. to boost the

73cm downlink signals from the satellite. After field day,

we can install is on our 440 machine.

PS:

Your 2m/440 HT (on the belt) is great while doing yard

work. Tell your spouse that you are simply "multi tasking"

and reducing the cell phone bill!

NEW BUSINESS

Proposed by-law change to be posted in newsletter, email

Larry made the motion for Kay to send a thank-you letter

to Data Radio for the donation of 2 cabinets (value close

to $1000) for our repeater, along with a 440 repeater and

6 different boxes of radio equipment (not yet sorted).

Steve and Fred discussed recent efforts by area ECs and

the Red Cross to better organize counties and their amateur

radio operation associations.  The Banks county EMA has

amateur radio equipment and Fred may hold some of our ARES

nets from that location.  Memos of Understanding need to

be created and/or updated.  We will have officials from

the Red Cross and other emergency groups visiting in the

next several months.

Steve presented the Field Day assignment sheet and asked

for volunteers.  Our Field Day will be held at Victoria

Bryant State Park again this year.  We will not be

reserving a campground.  Steve went through his list

tem by item to take suggestions.  He will be following

up with an email to complete needed items.

A motion was made and passed to purchase a large

sign/banner to be ready for Field Day.  Joe will take

care of the details.
