DDIT stands for Dharmsinh Desai Institute of Technology. As the name suggests, it is an institute for technological studies, essentially providing Bachelorettes in Engineering, as well as a Post-graduate degree in Computer Applications.

The
address is :
DDIT,
College
Road,
Nadiad.
Nadiad city is situated exactly between Ahmedabad and Baroda. It's like 55 kms from each of these cities. Students of this college are mainly from A'bad or Baroda. Most of them commute from their hometowns. But there are plenty of them who rent a room and stay there. (Needless to say, renting such accomodations and running food-messes for such students, is one of the biggest source of income for the residents in that area.)
The institute stands in the midst of beautiful surroundings on the outskirts of Nadiad city. The road that brings you to the college holds many colleges like the world-famous Ayurvedic college, JJ College of Arts and Science, DDIC (Dharmsinh Desai Institute of Commerce). Rightly so, the road is named College Road.
DDIT is quite a big campus which has one main structure in the centre, where all the departments and classrooms are located. There's a nice canteen on the left side, besides which there are a few labs for mechanical, civil and chemical engg. As you proceed to the back side of the campus your eyes will glow bright at the sight of a lush-green ground. We have played a lot of cricket there. You can also play football, volleyball or basketball in your free hours!
In the main building, you'll find a couple of open spaces which are maintained very well. Don't get surprised to see bright green lawns bearing big roses and other flowers, just outside your classroom! It's really a cool ambiance to be in.
DDIT has recently been declared as a "Deemed University". It is an autonomous body, not affiliated to any University. In other words, it is a university in itself.
The courses offered are :
BE
in Chemical Engineering
BE
in Mechanical Engineering
BE
in Civil Engineering
BE
in Electronics & Communications
BE
in Computer Engineering
Master
in Computer Applications
You
can even enrol in a 5 yr programme of BE+MBA
(Note:
Our batch of MCA [94-97] was the last one to be affiliated with Gujarat
University. After that, the course was declared to be a provision of DDIT).
The director and the discipline
As the college is not goverened by any University or anything, the principal, is designated as the "Director" of the college. His is Mr. H M Desai, and we can say is one of the "owners" of the college.
He is very (ill)famous for his discipline. Never does he hesitate in scolding or even smacking his students who don't follow his line of rules. A lot of prohibitions have been enforced in the campus. Here are a few that were in force during our tenure:
*
Smoking is strictly prohibited in the campus, and anyone found doing so,
will be heavily fined and can be suspended too.
*
You'll end up paying Rs. 25/- fine for plucking roses or any flowers.
*
Pay Rs. 50/- fine or forget the mangoes hanging on the mango-trees throughout
the campus.
*
You won't be allowed to appear in the exams if you don't have atleast 70%
attendance in a semester.
*
You are not allowed to dance or cheer loudly in the cultural/musical programmes
that are held inside the college.
(All of us paid a heavy fine Rs. 200/- each when we skipped a lecture of a visiting faculty, because of an exciting match between India and Pakistan..!!)
The
college owns a canteen for students. It is run by Ashokbhai, a daily commuter
from Maninagar.
Here's
what you can get :
Sada Dosa, Masala Dosa, Onion uttapam, Vegetable Uttapam, Bhaaji Paav, Chhole-puri, Omlettes, Egg-bhurji, Vegetable Puffs, Cream rolls(we had a nasty name for that!), Cold drinks, Tea and Coffee.
It's a nicely ventilated place where you can even sit and chat leisurely (make sure you don't have any class at that time, or keep your butt ready for a nice spanking..!) or write your journals.
A most common sight in the canteen (more common in our batch) was, the disappearance of a Masala Dosa! Yes, if you're sitting with 8-10 classmates on a table, don't even dare to order a Masala Dosa for yourself.... It will be gone before you lay your eyes on it!
The students who commute from A'bad or Baroda hardly get any time to hangout. They are more worried about returning to the railway station, rather than having fun in Nadiad, coz they have to catch the return train !! (Commuting in trains with friends is a great fun in itself too.. and trains have been the best hangout places for such commuters!!)
For them who stay in Nadiad have their and others' rooms for hanging out! No Kidding, such messy rooms which are a part of big bunglows, are way different from the conventional hostels. Besides these, Vaniavad circle is the most favourite place to spend the evenings. Guys and gals gather in places around the circle and chat for hours in the cool breeze of the evenings.
There are several restaurants and fast-food joints around this circle(Shayona, which is closed now, Bombay Chaat, and many more... You can enjoy water-balls ( what ? arey.. paani-puri, or gol-gappas..) at the corner of the Vaniavad circle. Couple of kilometers away, on the Nationa Highway 8, there are few good and cheap restaurants where you can fill your stomach up to the throat.
There are a few cinema halls too, in the city, where you can go and watch movies for cheap. It's worth mentioning that the mode of trasportation within the city is quite simple. For long distances, take a city-bus, which is reasonabely good service; or take a shuttle-auto - yet another peculiarity of Nadiad.
Bahbhi's galla, just opposite to the main gate of the college is the favourite place to hangout for students who desperately need to smoke during college hours.
