How do I connect to a server?
From
ED2K Help
First Close eDonkey and leave it closed, delete the server.met file in the edonkey directory.
Then download a new server.met file from one of the links below.
Put the server.met in the edonkey directory.
Then restart edonkey and give it at least 5 minutes to find a server.
(Make sure "always stay connected" is checked in options.)

What are the options I should set up?
From
ED2k Help
For Windows operating systems from 98 through XP
Online options setup calculator.
You need to know the speed of your connection (up and down)
in kilobytes to use this calc. Thanks to Pktloss
This is mainly intended for broadband users. (dsl, cable etc.)
Uncheck
"Automatically remove dead server" in options. (Some servers don't run 24 hours a day)
Check
"Always stay connected"
To optimize edonkey you need to make sure that the uploads are not interfering with your downloads.
(downloads require packets sent up for the download to continue) First check your "upload speed",
close edonkey and any other active transfers (ftp or other p2p programs):
www.dslreports.com/stest
or
www.bandwidthspeedtest.com/speedtest
(Your download speed isn't important at this time since it will be set to the machine max. anyway)
(You can reduce your download speed if you want to do other transfers elsewhere or surfing etc.)
After you receive the results of the speed test, it will most likely be reported to you in "kbps" which is
kilobits, you'll need to convert the kilobits into kilobytes since eDonkey recognizes kilobytes. Do this
by dividing the kilobits by the number 8. If your max up speed is reported as 160 kbps, then that equals
20 KBps (160 / 8 = 20).
Now multiply that number by 80% or 90%. In this case 90% of 20 is 18. You then need to place that
result in the "Max Upload Speed" of eDonkey's options. Note: many DSL users have trouble with this
ratio and need to set the max upload speed even lower. Typical DSL users should put 10 or 11 in Max
Upload Speed.
For "max download limit", that should remain at "0" unless you need the bandwidth for other Internet
activities.
"Line Speed Down" Do not place a number here larger than your actual maximum download speed, it
has been reported that too high of a number here reduces download speed. (don't know why,but why
risk it) If you get alot of "unasked" under your downloads, you might try setting it. eDonkey in later
releases will probably determine this number automatically. If the speed test reported your down speed
at 800 kb (100KB), you can put 100 in Line Speed Down.
"Max Connections" in options can be increased from 35 to between 100 and 500, if you have a wicked
cpu and memory, maybe 1000, this will help connect with more users, but going too high with this
number can possibly give you connections with too many users that won't actually transfer data and
therefore only drag down your speed and possibly your system.

How do I rip DVD's?
From MegaDude in Edonkey Chat room #USA-50
firstly, this guide is for:
divX 5.02
gknot 2.6
besweet 1.3b9 + besweet GUI
virtual dub 1.4_10
nandub
dvd2avi 1.76
smartripper 2.40
1. prepare the vobs
place the dvd into your dvdrom drive, then open smartripper. sr(smartripper)
should check your dvd for
video streams and aspi support. at the top right, click on rip method: "movie".
sr will now pick
what it thinks is the correct file to rip for you. if u click on stream
processing, u can see how
many auto tracks there are and which language they are in. make a note of the
track u will use
for the mp3 file . now, back to input tab, select a target folder at the bottom
and click on start!
2. Decode the vobs/create a d2v project file
Open dvd2avi and press f3 to load the vob files.
Select the first vob file (eg. vob_1_1) then press enter. Another window will
popup with all of the vobs for that movie, press enter again.
Now press f5 to preview, and look at the display on the right side, this will
tell u what type
of frames(progressive or interlaced) and the fps(frames per second).
If the frame type is ntsc or film 95% or higher u need to select the force film
option (video--
field operation--
force film on). Activating this option will
decode the vobs to 23.97 fps.
Now for the audio. Audio-- dolby digital and "select demux all tracks".
This will seperate the ac3 audio and allow us to compress to mp3.
Now save the project by pressing F4.
3. Encode the audio track.
Open besweet gui and locate the besweet.exe. Right under that locate the ac3
file that we just
demuxed with Dvd2avi.
Now locate and name the directory and filename for the mp3.
Next click on the azid 1 button on the right. Select output mode: stereo and
make sure "Auto find maximum gain" is checked.
Next click azid 2 and check "USe dilog normalization reduction".
Now click lame 2 and select error protection.
Then select use ABR. Select 128 kbps for 1 cd rip, 160 for 2 cds.
Also check "minimum allowed bitrate=32" and "maximum allowed=320".
click on the besweet button, (just under Boost and 2Lame) and click on ac3 to
mp3.
Then 20-40 minutes later you will have your mp3 file.
4. processing the video/create a avs
open gknot, goto the bottom right and under the SAVE heading, rename movie 1 to
movie 1.avs.
Now on the bottom left click "Open" and select your d2v project. A preview
window should popup.
Now displaying your movie.
Goto the bitrate tab of gknot and under codec select divx 5.
Then select if u want to make 1 cd or 2 cd rip (this will adjust the total file
size)
check calculate frame- overhead and select either "1x vbr-mp3" if doing a 1 cd
rip or "2x vbr-mp3" if doing a 2 cd rip.
Now to the left under "Audio A" click on the select button and select the mp3
file we just encoded with BeSweet (the space left over from the mp3 file and the
frame overhead will goto the video).
Now on to the resolution tab. You'll need to crop off the black bars (if there
are none, skip this step). You can choose to auto crop and let gknot crop for
you or you can click on pixel, and use the up/down arrows to manually crop.
Now to the preview window and select view resized.
Under the slider bar in the Resolution Tab is Bits/(pixel*frame) you want this
value to be close to .200 for 1cd and .270 for 2cds rip.
Adjust the Width x Height until u reach the correct setting.
Now goto the preview window and select save and encode.
Another window with more options will popup, not much to here unless u want to
change the resize method(gknot will pick the best option for your movie) or add
the subs if any.
Click on save , saving the movie.avs file leaving gknot open
now, open vdub and load the movie.avs file. go to video and select fastrecompress.
back to video, select compression. then select the divx 5 codec and click on configure.
in the "divX codec tab" select 2-pass, first pass from the drop down menu.
input the bitrate that gknot calculated(bitrate tab) into the encoding bitrate window on the right
select a folder were to save the log file
under mpeg4 tools, select use GMC and Use Bidirectional encoding
now, in the advanced parameters tab select max quatizer=12, min=2, perfomace=slowest
press ok, then ok again and hit f7 to save as avi. name your movie and click on the add operation to
job list and defer processing
select video
compression
configure dvix 5 again and from the drop down, select 2pass, 2nd pass
then select f7 again, saving the movie and once again click on the add operation to
job list and defer processing
so now, press f4 for job control and your 2 passes are in there waiting to be started, and u can start them anytime now
5. mixing the compressed video and mp3 files
open nandub and press cntrl+o to open the avi u just encoded. select
video
direct stream copy.
now goto the audio tab and select mp3, select the mp3 file. still in audio
select interleaving
and select mux every 500 ms. make sure audio is set to direct stream copy and
press f7 to save

How do I play Bin/Cue Files without burning them to cd?
I use a program called
Daemon Tools
to play bin/cue files.
Daemon Tools is a CDROM emulator. It emulates a CDROM on your hard drive so the system thinks you have an additonal CDROM installed. You create images of your CDs by using a CD burning software and mount them to Daemon Tools. Daemon Tools interprets this image into a normal CD.
Download
and install D-Tools.
