She Ain't The Girl For You

It made it sick to her stomach.

Watching the so- called happy couple across the room, Julie knew the truth behind those fake smiles and those touches that were to make people believe they were truly a happy couple.

But they didn't know that he was hurting. They didn't know that it was actually her, his best friend, that he cried to whenever he found his girlfriend in bed with another guy. It was Julie who he was on the phone with practically every night when his girlfriend ditched him to hang out with her "guy friends."

Lance had always known that Amy's "guy friends" were more than that. He knew that she slept around, but there was something about her. He just kept forgiving her and taking her back. He knew Julie was right when she told him he deserved better, but he would just tell her and everybody else that asked why he hadn't dumped Amy, that he loved her.

He knew it probably sounded crazy, but that's the way he felt. He was totally oblivious to the fact that his best friend was in love with him.

Tears on the phone, round midnight
You assume that I will be alone
She hurt you once, hurt you twice
You keep asking for my advice
How many times you have to hear the truth
She ain't the girl for you

And Julie hated hiding it, as she had since she had realized it, a few months ago. It finally came to her why she was so jealous of Amy. Not because Amy was what most girls dreamed of....beautiful, talented, and had the brains. Julie didn't care about that. She was beautiful, too. And talented. But was jealous because Amy had the one thing she could never have....Lance's heart. Ever since Amy came into his life four years ago, Julie had all been but forgotten. Sure, she and Lance were still the best of friends, but compared to his precious Amy, she was nothing. The moments Julie cherished most were the midnight calls she received from Lance after he had caught Amy in another act that had him crying and ready to break.

And there was Julie, as always, giving him a shoulder to cry on. She often wondered if she should just tell him how she really felt about him, but everytime she tried, she got tongue tied, and ended up saying something totally off topic. And Lance would just laugh, and he loved that, knowing she could make him laugh when he was feeling down.

I can't believe he took her back again. What is it going to take for him to see the truth?

Julie sighed, watching them talking over the rim of her coffee cup. Everyone was gathered at Lance's house, a party before Lance would leave the next day on a European tour. And she hadn't even had one moment alone with him, because Amy was hanging all over him, not letting him out of her sight. Julie really hated when she did that. Amy, of course, knew of Julie's real feelings for Lance, even if she didn't let anyone know. She made damn sure that Lance and Julie were never alone, because deep down Amy knew that if Lance found out, he would leave her and go and be with Julie.

His Julie. Amy snorted. Those two were too damn close, and she had to do everything she could to keep Julie from getting any closer to stealing him away from her.

Now she was whispering sweet nothing's in his ear, Julie thought, watching Amy pratically groping him in the room. She turned her head, unable to stand to watch them anymore.

She makes you cry and still you stay
Why can't you just walk away
Everytime you hurt, it hurts me too
She ain't the girl for you

That night now was just a distant memory. Months passed, and about once a week, Lance called Julie late at night, crying, and complaining how Amy had hurt him again. But now, when the phone rang, Julie knew it would be different. She just had a feeling.

"Jules." When he used the nickname he had given her when they were ten, Julie knew that something had happened. Something that he only wanted to share with her.

"Lance." She waited. Pause. A breath. Then a sigh from the other side of the connection. "Is everything okay? You sound like you're crying."

The blonde on the other end of the line gave one more sigh before talking. "I've been such a fool," he said.

"What happened?" It was pretty much a given this had something to do with Amy. She just waited for him to say what had happened.

He waited another minute before answering again. "Well, first you should know that me and Amy broke up this morning....for good."

As hard as she tried, Julie couldn't stop the smile. What was she supposed to do? Be sad that he was no longer with Amy, when she had repeatedly broken his heart? Hell no.

"I called her last weekend and this guy picked up the phone. He told me he and Amy were moving in together. And for some reason, I was expecting him to say something like that. It finally made me realize how much of my life I've been wasting with her."

"No offense, Lance," Julie started cautiously, "but it's about time."

You know i'll play the part of the friend
Who bandages you broken heart
And in return you turn to me
There's no limit to what I can be
What I am, she cannot do
She ain't the girl for you

When he laughed, Julie went silent. "And you know, I finally realized something," he said.

        "What's that?" Julie asked.

"What's been in front of me all this time."

She makes you cry and still you stay
Why can't you just walk away
Everytime you hurt, it hurts me too
She ain't the girl for you

I'm the one who understands
It's me who holds your hand

"What's been in front of you all this time?" Julie was breathing heavily now, thinking this was too good to be true.

        "Step outside, and you'll see."

His voice was sending chills down her spine. "What are you ta---"

"Just do it," he interrupted her. "Please." He said it in the pleading voice that always made her jump.

"Fine. Hold on." She got off the couch and opened the front door, and her eyes looked over at the figure sitting down on the porch steps. No, it can't be.

But it was. Lance got up off the steps, and after clicking off his phone, walked over to where his best friend was standing, shock covering her face. "I finally see what's been standing in front of me all this time," he said, then leaned over and for the first time, kissed her like he really loved her, not when he had kissed her two weeks ago, and had told her it was a mistake. This wasn't one.

Too shocked at the sudden action by her best friend, Julie pulled away. "What---"

He smiled. "I heard you talking to Joey. When you said you were in love with me, I couldn't believe it. I tried to tell myself that I didn't love you too, but I couldn't lie to myself anymore. I'm in love with you, too. And I think I always have been, but I've been too afraid to admit it. Too afraid to open up my heart again."

"Oh my." She was finding it hard to breath again. How could he do that everytime she was around him? It was like he held this higher power over her, controlling her every emotion. "I don't know what to say."

"I don't know. Maybe tell me that I haven't lost my chance, and that you still love me." He moved closer again, and Julie felt those familiar feelings of love for him, swell up again.

She didn't answer, just pulled him close and hugged him. "Why did it take you so damn long," she said. She pulled him down for a kiss.

"I don't know. I'm just slow, remember?" He laughed. "Remind me to thank you later for making me realize that she wasn't the girl for me." For now, though, he just wanted to hold her, and forget about the world around them.

"Okay." Then she pulled him inside. And the rest is history.

Lance finally realized that Julie was right. Amy wasn't the girl for him. She was.

She makes you cry and still you stay
