Elizabeth hung up
the phone. She was glad he called before he left, even if it was four am.
She couldn't possibly go back to sleep now. She had already jumped out of
the bed when the phone had rung.
She had put on her robe on and made
herself comfortable on the couch. She was deep in thought when there was
a knock at the door. She wondered who it could be since it was only quarter
to five.
She got up and answered the door, she
looked at the man standing in her doorway. Those eyes, those hypnotizing
eyes. Couldn't he just leave her alone?
“Thomas, what are you doing here?”
“I came to see you,” he said walking
in, not giving her a chance to argue the fact that he was staying for a while.
Elizabeth closed the door wanting to
slam it, but didn't cause she would have woken up the others in the building.
“It's too early in the morning! What do you want?”
He grinned then patted the place beside
him on the couch, but she shook her head and crossed her arms over her chest.
“I know what time it is. I figured
you'd be alone since lover boy is out of town,” he said.
“Just get to the point.”
“You've been thinking a lot about me,
haven't you?” Thomas asked looking into her eyes. She was avoiding eye contact
with him. “Come on, I know you want to give us another chance.”
It was obvious to her after her and
Justin's last day together that Justin knew her better then anyone ever had.
Thomas had never really listened when she talked.
“No, I don’t,” she said confidently.
“Why do you keep denying us the second
chance?”
He didn't listen now either it seemed.
She had told him many times before. She had changed and by the looks of him,
so had he. She studied Thomas' face before answering.
“Because I don't love you anymore.”
He looked at her with pleading eyes
as if he was going to break down and cry. The words hit him like a ton of
bricks, but he didn't believe her, he knew she still felt something for him.
“That's not true.”
“Yes, it is.”
“You keep saying that you don't love
me but I still see that look in your eyes, the one you always had when we
were together,” Thomas said, his eyes trailing from her eyes to her mouth.
Continuing to glare at him, she knew,
wouldn't do any good. She couldn't deny that she had missed seeing him, but
that had nothing to do with love. “I still look at you the same way I did
the day you left me.” She was still bitter, she supposed. But she didn’t
love him anymore. She knew that much.
The cold look in her eyes hurt him.
He wanted to make everything better, he wanted to fix the large mistake he
made years ago. He wondered why he never saw how amazing Elizabeth was.
“I'm sorry I did that. I'll do anything
to prove to you how sorry I am.”
She saw some trueness is his eyes,
but couldn't make out what else she saw. It was like there was this cloud
holding a part of him, a part she used to love.
“I don't need any proof of anything.
I just want you to leave me alone, I have a new life now.”
“But I want to be a part of it,” he
expressed in a distinct tone that left no doubt of his sincerity.
“You can be my friend.”
“No,” he said, his eyes still pleading
with her to give them a chance. He couldn't accept the idea of them just
being friends. He wanted to take Justin's place, a place that he believed
was rightfully his.
“What do you mean no?”
He watched as she studied his eyes.
There seemed to be so much tension between them, but not all necessarily
bad. “Look me in the eyes and tell me you don't love me. I want to believe
you.”
She did her best not to look at him.
She had always found him handsome.
“I don't love you,” she said.
Before she could take another breath,
Thomas had made his way over to her and his mouth was crushing down on hers.
She tried to pull away but his force was much too strong, she couldn't get
away. She wasn't even sure she wanted to. She made herself sigh as the kiss
was deepened by him.
“If only you knew how long I've waited
to do that again,” he breathed softly into her ear.
She moved away from him slowly, keeping
her eyes away from where she had kissed him. Had she really done that?
“That shouldn't have happened,” she
said in a shaky breath.
“Yes it should have, it was meant to
happen.” He leaned in to capture her lips again but was interrupted by a
knock at the door. He groaned then stepped back so Elizabeth could get the
door. He wished there was a way to stop her, he wanted her alone, they needed
to be alone.
Elizabeth opened the door then stepped
outside.
“Anna what are you doing here?” She
looked nervous, her hands were shaking. She quickly hid them behind her back
so Anna wouldn't notice.
Anna embraced her in a hug. “I came
to see you.”
Elizabeth put on her best smile. “I'm
glad you stopped by. Why don't you let me get my bag then we can go grab
some lunch?”
Anna showed Elizabeth her watch and
laughed. “How about we start with breakfast first?”
“Right.” She went back inside and found
Thomas still standing in the same spot. “Listen I'm going out for breakfast
with Anna, please leave after we're gone,” she said sternly.
“Fine, I’ll drop by later and we can
finish this.”
That's what she was afraid he'd say.
She grabbed her coat and bag off the kitchen table. “There's nothing left
to discuss. That kiss was a mistake.”
“No it wasn’t.”
Before she could argue, he had kissed
her again, but this time she was able to pull away.
“There's much to talk about,” he whispered.
“No there isn’t,” she protested, but
it was no use. There was just no convincing him. This was not over.
“All in good time.”
She gave him a look that hurt him.
He knew in time she would realized that she still loved him, so for now he
would let her go, and he did.
