Chapter Ten

Christina didn't go to school the next day. She was too upset and didn't want to see that mean look in Joey's eyes again. When she had seen it yesterday she saw a side of him she'd never seen before.

She woke up just after ten in the morning after only falling asleep just before five o clock. She slowly opened her eyes and saw she was still in her bedroom. The covers were all over the place, she had been tossing and turning all night. She sat up then looked in the mirror on her wall and sighed.

“I'm not going to school today. I can't face Joey.”

A tear fell down her face as she told herself that out loud. “I've just lost my best friend and it's all Missy's fault! I'm going to make her pay tomorrow.”

She hung her head then went back to sleep against the pillow.

Joey walked into the school yawning and his face all red. He couldn't hear people talking behind his back about his looks but he wouldn't have cared. He was too upset.

“Joey, there you are!” Lance said running up to him. Joey turned and saw him standing there but didn't really care. “Why weren't you at practice this morning?”

“What practice? What?” Joey looked confused. He had missed the practice for concert tryouts. Now he was out of the running for the top spot.

“For lead vocalist, Joey. They gave me and Mark Grinder the part,” Lance said.

Joey groaned. He didn’t need any more bad news. And hearing Mark got the part instead of him, only got his blood boiling more. He hated Mark almost as much as he hated Justin.

“He what? Who would give him the part? He's such a mean, freakin.…” Joey was getting all frantic and Lance saw a side of Joey he'd never seen before. Joey never used words like ‘freakin’.

Lance knew right away something wasn’t right. “Joe, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“Joey!” Lance said. He could always tell when something was wrong with him, they were best friends. They could always tell things about each other when nobody else could.

“Lance, just don't try and get it out of me, okay? I don't want to talk about it,” Joey said in an angry but soft tone.

“Maybe Christina can help.…”

“No, Lance she can't, okay? We're not friends anymore.” Joey wanted to be left alone, so he walked the other way.

But Lance was behind him, every step of the way even when Joey would speed up. “What do you mean you’re not friends anymore?”

“What I just said. We're not friends anymore. She's back to her old selfish ways,” Joey said, the anger showing in his tone.

“Joey, don't be like that. She has not. She’s a very caring…”

“Who was only friends with me cause she had no where else to go!” Everyone around them heard because Joey spoke so loud. “She told me the truth. It's true, she doesn't care about me, she never did.” Joey was now whispering. He didn’t need anyone else to know about this.

“Oh my gosh, I can't believe she fooled us all so well. She even had Lila believing she had a crush on you.” Lance was still in shock.

“What?” Joey asked as a little smile crossed his face. “What happened? How would Lila think that?”

“Christina told her yesterday after school. Lila said she was blushing and going on about how caring you are. Lila did say though that Christina said that at first she only started hanging around with us because she had seen Missy and Justin kiss. But the moment she sat down, she stayed because she wanted to. Man give her a chance, I think she really cares about you.” Lance patted Joey on the back.

“I believed Missy over Christina.” Joey couldn’t believe he’d been such an idiot.

He had spoken really cruel words to Christina when it was obvious that she really did care about him. Christina could have been friends with anybody. She just didn’t choose him because he was there. Maybe at first, but it was evident now to Joey that she stayed because she wanted to. Not because she had no other choice.

“What have I done? Is Lance right? Or is Missy right? Maybe Christina was telling me the truth. Maybe she does care about me.” Joey didn’t think anybody was listening to him, but he was wrong.

“I knew it,” Justin said angrily. “She does have feelings for you!” It was a very rare occasion when someone would rather have Joey than Justin, in Justin’s opinion. “Who would have feelings for you? You’re just a loser with no life!”

“She doesn’t have feelings---” Joey couldn’t get anymore words out. Justin came towards him and with one punch to the stomach, knocked Joey to the ground.

And Justin just left him there.
