Week
4 vs CRC Falcons
9/29/02 The Storm got back on track with a big win over the CRC Falcons. Starting QB Don Davis was sidelined for most of the game with injuries sustained at last week's game against the Hammers, but that was of little consequence - backup QB Rob Adkins had a huge game, leadding the Storm to their third victory of the season. The game started out with a nice kick return combination. KR Josh Foxson fielded a short kick, ran a few steps and then fired a pass across the field to Randy Burchick who accelerated down the sidelines before being pushed out of bounds at the Falcons 40 yard line. From there, QB Don Davis hit Dave Harrison for a 27 yard completion on the left sideline. "I looked up and there was no one covering me, so I yelled to Don and we got the snap off before they could rotate their defense over." said WR Dave Harrison. From there, they had a couple of nice option runs, but a dropped ball in the end zone ended the first drive. However, the Storm defense came ready to play. After a couple of batted passes, Everett "Mad Dog" Henderson sliced through the line and sacked the Falcons QB in their end zone for a safety. It was just the start of a huge day for Henderson. He ended the day with 4 passes defended, a safety and a big interception. Storm 2 - Falcons 0 Storm took the kickoff and again moved the ball down to the red zone, but once again the drive ended like the first one with a dropped ball in the end zone. However, the Storm defense once again came up big, stopping the Falcons on downs. On the next offensive drive, backup QB Rob Adkins took over. He first had a nice designed run up the middle for 15 yards, then on a called pass play saw the middle of the line open up and made a quick decision to tuck the ball and run. He avoided a couple defenders and scored the first touchdown of the game. The 2 point kick by Dave Harrison was no good. Storm 8 - Falcons 0 With time running down in the first half, the Storm should have been playing to avoid the big play, but the Falcons were able to find one of their receivers deep down the sideline when CB Dave Harrison fell down and safety Jeremy Rualo was unable to catch him. The 2 point try was good. At the half, the score was tied. Storm 8 - Falcons 8 However, the Storm defense was ready to step up to the challenge. On the opening Falcons drive, DL Everett "Mad Dog" Henderson made an outstanding interception to stop the Falcons. "It was one of the best interceptions I have ever seen at any level of football. E was totally stretched out and the ball just stuck to his hands as he came down." said coach Don Davis. From there, Adkins took over putting together a nice sustained drive culminating in a beautiful swing pass to SB Tony Swearinger who burst around the right corner for the touchdown. The 2 point kick was blocked. Storm 14 - Falcons 8 On the next Falcons drive, the Storm defense once again came up big, stopping them on downs. The clock was winding down in the fourth quarter, all Adkins had to do was get a first down to run out the clock. The first play was an audible, but receiver Dave Harrison didn't get the signal, resulting in an incomplete pass. A screen pass to Randy Burchick put the Storm in third and short. The call was for a counter option to Randy Burchick, but the defense stayed at home and sealed up the backside. Thinking quick, Burchick revered field and looked up to see Josh Foxson wide open in the end zone. The throw was on target and the Storm had their third score of the day. The conversion try was a fake kick. Josh Foxson threw a pass to his brother Bret who caught it for 2 points Storm 22 - Falcons 8 The Falcons had once more chance to get back in the game, but LB TC Hammond killed any thoughts of a comeback with an interception to end the game. "I was really happy with the composure we showed today and the way we won. It was a tight game in the first half and we couldn't seem to make the plays when we needed them, but Rob came in and brought a spark to the offense. He made good, quick decisions and managed the game well. Offensive game ball to him. On the defensive side E just exploded. He was all over the field making plays…everything from defending passes to catching interceptions to sacking the quarterback. Defensive game ball to E!" said coach Don Davis. The Storm is tied for first place in the league with a 3 - 1 record. Next week's game is at 8:00 am EST versus the 3 - 1 Wolfpack. Pregame coverage starts at 7:30 on ESPN3.
Week 3 vs. SAIC Hammers 9/22/02 The game started out on a promising note, but ultimately, the Storm fell victim to the Hammers who handed the Storm their first loss of the season. Storm won the toss and elected to receive the kickoff. KR Randy Burchick fielded the kickoff and brought it back to the Storm 25 yard line. The first play from scrimmage was a QB run up the middle by Don Davis. Following the blocks of OL Doug Tingle and Everett Henderson as well as C Bret Foxson and SB Randy Burchick, Davis burst through the middle and then cut it outside and down the right sideline. From there, it was off to the races with an escort provided by WR Dave Harrison. 75 yards later, the Storm had their first score. K Dave Harrison completed the 2 point kick. Storm 8 - Hammers 0 From there, the game went downhill. The Storm defense was unprepared for the offensive assault of the Hammers. "In the first drive, we looked confused. We gave up a couple of big plays to their linemen and it was much too easy for them to score." said defensive coordinator Rob Montgomery. Storm 8 - Hammers 8 The next drive, Storm dug in with their usual blend of power running and deep passing, but it simply wasn't clicking for them today. A couple of nice option runs by SBs Randy Burchick and Rob Adkins moved the ball down the field, but the drive stalled out. Unfortunately, the Hammers picked up right where they left off and score again with less than two minutes remaining. Storm 8 - Hammers 16 The Storm took the field and had a nice drive right down to the end zone, but with time running out in the half, were unable to score before the half ended. "We were down inside the five yard line, but we didn't have any timeouts left, I wanted to run a QB sneak up over the left side, since it looked like Dougie could kick his man outside, but I couldn't risk getting tackled short and running out of time." said QB Don Davis. However, the pass plays were well covered and fell incomplete leaving the Storm without the tying touchdown they had hoped for. After the half, the Storm defense put up their best effort of the day. Brian Barker had a big sack and the Hammers turned the ball over on downs in their own territory. Unfortunately, the Hammer defense responded in kind with their own sack and on fourth down, Davis threw an interception. The Hammer offense wasted no time moving the ball down again and scoring. Storm 8 - Hammers 24 On the ensuing kickoff, Davis fielded the ball, but suffered severe back spasms and was unable to return to the game. Backup QB Rob Adkins came in and his first pass was intercepted. The Hammers once again scored to end the game. Final Score: Storm 8 - Hammers 30 "I was quite frustrated with our defense. We thought that if we could keep their QB from running and dumping off to his linemen, that we would make some plays on his throws to the wide receivers. Well, we stopped the run and the dump off passes (except for the first drive), but we didn't match up well against their wide receivers." said coach Don Davis. "We will have to do a better job when we play them again." The
Storm's record falls to 2 - 1. The Hammers lost the next game in their
double header, so there is now a log jamb of 2 - 1 teams at the top of
the standings. The Storm's next game is at 10:00 am EST at Andover Stadium
versus the 0 - 2 CRC Falcons. Pregame coverage starts on ESPN3 at 9:00.
Week 2 vs PG Skins 9/15/02 Storm got their second win today, defeating a tough PG Skins team. The game started out great for the Storm. On their first drive, an early deep pass to WR Josh Foxson who stumbled and dove for a long gain got them down into the red zone. QB Don Davis made a zig-zagging run right up the middle for an apparent touchdown, but was called down at the one. No matter, on the next play a QB sneak put the Storm ahead to stay. K Dave Harrison made the two point kick. Storm 8 - PG Skins 0 However, after that first drive, the game got ugly. The PG skins could not move the ball against the Storm defense, and while the Storm offense moved the ball intermittently, they couldn't punch it into the end zone again. WR Dave Harrison had a nice catch near the right hand sideline for 38 yards, but then Davis threw an interception trying to force the ball in between two defenders. After the half, things remained much the same, with the Storm moving the ball down the field, but unable to come up with a play to get it in the end zone. The final two minutes saw the Skins put together a drive and score on a 10 yard pass play. Their 2 point try from scrimmage was batted away. Storm 8 - PG Skins 6 With less than a minute left, the Skins only hope was to recover an on-side kick. However, KR Mike Parrish fielded the kick and ran it outside the 20 yard line, thus securing the Storm win. "It wasn't pretty, but it was a win." said OL Doug Tingle after the game "The Skins always seem to get us into a close game and somehow force us into playing their brand of sloppy, ugly football. I'm extremely happy to get out of here with a win." The
Storm is at the top of the standings with a 2 - 0 record. Their next game
is at 8:00 am EST against the SAIC Hammers. Pregame coverage on ESPN3 starts
at 7:30.
Week 1 vs Ciena Blaze 9/8/02 The Storm started the year with a bang beating the Blaze 30 - 0. The defense pitched a shutout and the offense scored on every possession (and nearly every play!) The Blaze got the opening kickoff and after the defense forced a punt, Storm took over at their own 40 yard line. The first play from scrimmage was an option run left. QB Don Davis turned upfield off of a great block by OL Doug Tingle. From there he cut it back, gave the safety a jab step (the safety actually fell down!) and took it to the end zone. The 2pt kick by K Dave Harrison was good. Storm 8 - Blaze 0 On the next drive, the defense was solid once again and forced the second punt of the day. this time, KR Mike Parrish received the punt and returned it about 20 yards to the Blaze 30 yard line. From there, SB Randy Burchick took a short pass to inside the 20 and an option keeper by the QB, this time to the right, gave the Storm their second score of the day. This time the 2pt kick was blocked. Storm 14 - Blaze 0 After the half, the Storm returned the ball to about the 35 yard line. The first play was an option right, which Davis was able to run for a short gain. The next play was a skinny post pattern to SB Randy Burchick who took it 60 yards for the touchdown. The 2pt try was a fake kick. Holder Don Davis threw a pass to WR Josh Foxson in the back of the end zone. Storm 22 - Blaze 0 The ensuing Blaze drive was their best of the day with a couple of long pass completions, but DE Brian Barker put an end to it with a big sack. Storm took over on downs and a little cross dive to SB Randy Burchick turned into their fourth touchdown of the day. Randy ran 60 yards up the right sideline and while it looked like three Blaze defenders had angles to catch him, he simply ran by them all. The 2pt kick by Harrison was good. Final Score: Storm 30 - Blaze 0 The Storm is 1 - 0. Their next game is at Andover Stadium at 10:00 am versus the PG Skins. Pregame coverage on ESPN3 starts at 9:00 am EST. |
