Lifting the Veil
A Political History of Struggles for Emancipation
by Richard A. Couto
Professor Couto has written a compelling story about the political history of Haywood County Tennessee from Reconstruction to the present. The story is told through the voices of Haywood County African American residents and their descendants. One of those voices is that of Nann Hess Davis whose husband was instrumental in forming a local chapter of the NAACP in 1939. Opposition to this culminated in the lynching of Brownsville resident Elbert Williams in June of 1940. For his efforts, Elisha Davis was forced to flee Tennessee, forfeit his home and business, as well as endure separation from his wife and children when he went into hiding.

Through extensive research, family documents, and the memories of the participants the author has shown Haywood County's place in the civil rights movement of this country.
Richard A. Couto is Jepson School of Leadership Studies Professor at the University of Richmond, Virginia.

Lifting the Veil from the faces of the coming generations of Haywood County
Twenty three years after the lynching of Elbert Williams, an N.A.A.C.P. charter officially began in Brownsville. Mldred Bond left, daughter of Ollie Bond, and N.A.A.C.P. secretary presented the charter. Ollie Bond, Elisha Davis, and several other Brownsville citizens first tried to establish a charter in 1939.
