On the surface, Poets appear to be the weakest class in the game. Their hunting spells are incredibly weak, even at higher levels. They can't really hunt alone throughout most of their carreers. A poet is extremely dependant on mages, fighters, or rogues, as poets barely have any defense spells at all. A poet's main job is healing, and at extremely high levels, raising the dead.
Even though they seem weak, this is a false interpretation. At lower levels they die a lot because they have basically no defense, but after gaining a few levels, all manner of spells open up for them. A poet needs: the best heal spell they can get, the best curse spell they can get, a 4 way heal spell, COW (Call of the Wild) for protection, and as soon as they get to 99, the raise dead spell, Armor, Valor, Sanctuary, plus one distance attack spell.
EVERYONE in the game is always looking for a poet. Although a mage can heal, a poet can heal much greater damage. Using COW, a poet can call animals to block the monsters from hitting him/her. Poets get bonuses in most crafting skills. Also, if a poet who has used COW attacks something, the animals he has called will go attack it also, meaning that he/she now has powerful friends attacking for him. He doesn't get as much experience as if he had killed it himself, but a poet can hunt alone once they have the COW spell. I have seen poets hunting alone take down some pretty awesome monsters by summoning gorillas.
The secret to being a poet is to watch the people you are healing. If a monster hits the person you are healing, and there is a big drop in their vita, its probably time to use armor, Sanctuary and Valor (Called ASV) then start healing again. A good poet almost never has to be asked to heal or ASV. He/she knows that if the warrior beserks, or whirlwinds, or the rogue ka's, you must start healing immediately as it uses most of their vita. A good poet watches the lifeline of their charge, and heals at need instead of when asked. A good poet will have already used Scourge on all the monsters, their party will never even have to ask. The rule to being a poet is keep your party alive at all cost EXCEPT your own life. |
