To pursue the crafts of woodcutting & carpentry, you must visit Splinter, in his small hut in the Wilderness. Splinter is a jolly sort, and will offer you advice regarding both the cutting of wood & carpentry. He sells Axes, and will direct you to two groves where you can cut wood.
After honing your axe, you will need to travel to one of the four groves in the Wildnerness. One is near Splinter's hut, two by the small village where one can craft gems & weave cloth, and the last to the south-east of the sheep fields.
To cut wood, you enter a grove & drop your axe. Retrieve your axe and you may be fortunate enough to find some Ginko wood or a rare Silver Tree Branch! Move to another spot, then drop & retrieve your axe again. After much time, you will eventually gather a bundle of 30 Ginko wood.
Once you have a good supply of Ginko wood, visit Splinter. The craft of Carpentry is demanding, so you cannot perform other crafts such as Tailoring or Smithing. Splinter asks a nominal fee for his initial Carpentry lessons.
In Splinter's hut, you need only say 'wood' and he will guide you to craft the item of your choice. It is rumored that crafting Weaving tools will advance your skill quickly. Splinter will purchase your Weaving tools for a small price. However, I found the crafting of Melee weapons to be profitable - particularly once you are a Talented Carpenter and can make Wooden swords. All Melee weapons can be sold in Buya to the smith.
