Reflection Standard 6
This is an interesting standard. It seems to encompass many important ideas; legal and ethical issues, diversity, and safe and healthy use of technology. The legal and ethical aspect of this standard is something that I hadn't given much thought before taking the educational technology classes. Teachers are always making copies of worksheets, encyclopedia pages, magazine pages and other copyrighted material, often without even considering the legality of it. The computer has opened up many other avenues for copyright infringement. It can be so easy to cut and paste information from the internet to your own paper. Lesson plans, worksheets, articles, pictures, audio, and video can be downloaded so simply. I don't think that most people even give it a second thought. While taking the courses Using Integrated Software and Technology and Language Arts we had to right reactions and scenarios that discussed fair use policy. The educational technology classes have made me much more conscientious about be careful with copyrighted material.
Meeting the needs of all students through the use of technology is a method that needs much exploration by teachers. There are so many different types of learners in each of our classrooms that it is essential that we begin to use tools that will help us reach those different learners in the most effective and efficient way. The computer can be the tool to help us. In recent years, I have seen IEP's that include technology items to help assist students with special needs in my classroom. The need to use a word processor or a QuickPad has been included to help students who have difficulty writing by hand. There has also been a student that needed to use software that would read aloud what he typed so that he could hear any mistakes. I have also heard of some students using voice recognition software to assist with writing. These tools have been used to help students with special needs why not all students who need them. This standard makes it clear that teaching professionals need to look to technology to assist in the meeting the needs of diverse classrooms.
There is definitely a need for section D regarding safe and healthy use of technology. Students need to be aware that there are appropriate uses for technology. Modeling this as teachers is essential. When we are teaching students how to search for information on the Internet we need to be sure that we guide them in the right direction. There have been a few times in my class when students have stumbled across information that should have been filtered out by the district software. In addition to students finding inappropriate material on the Interent, it is unfortunate that students need to watch out for their safety will surfing the web. We have all heard too many horror stories of students meeting up with people out to do them harm. We need to help the students in our classroom. Students need to know that they must be responsible when they use technology. Teaching students how and where to search for information will help them to stay safe and healthy.
