Reflection Standard 3 |
| Standard 3, Teaching, Learning and the Curriculum is the area wherein technology facilitators can be most beneficial to classroom teachers. Being able to help teachers incorporate technology within the content areas and throughout the curriculum can help create authentic learning situations and lessons that address more learning needs. Although there are many reluctant teachers out there who don't want to incorporate technology with their lessons, I believe that many would be more willing if they knew where to start. |
| The standard ensures that the technology facilitator is knowledgeable about sound teaching practices and methods, and not just tech-savvy. My school has begun to do a better job in this area. We have computer consultants, whose job has them focus on teaching programs, devices, and researching skills. Over the past few years they have done a better job at trying to help the teachers incorporate their lessons through the curriculum. The way it is done seems like an add-on though. I do a lot on the three computers in my classroom. It feels more natural and authentic when we use the computer or the digital camera or video components right in the classroom. Computer lab time ends up feeling like another class rather than a resource and tool to help us learn. |
| Through the past few years I have developed many lessons, units, and activities using the computer and other technologies. A couple of them I have linked as artifacts for Standard 2 learning environments, but they also seem to fit well for this standard. One is a unit on the Midwest that I developed for Using Integrated Software, which I also use as a class unit for social studies. The other is unit that I created for Distance Learning which would help new teachers implement organizational and management techniques into their teaching. Recently my students completed a health unit on bullying. We did a lot of role playing and dialoguing about bullying situations, why they occurred, and how students get out of theses situations without anyone getting hurt. This was to give students a vocabulary to use in situations that might arise. From there the students wrote scripts which we eventually acted out. We video taped them and as a class edited it and created a class bullying video which I can use next year to help teach other students about bullying. I think that this unit fit well with the section of the standard that says technology facilitators use media-based tools within the curriculum. |
| I have also created various computer scavenger hunts to help students develop research skills and to help reach many different learning styles. I have included one on hurricanes that fits nicely within the social studies and science curriculums. I have also included a PowerPoint presentation that I used during a study of the Northeast. |
