The article title “Leadership Implication of Using Interactive Whiteboards,” was a study that focused on the factors that are required to have successful incorporation of interactive whiteboards in the classrooms and the benefits to student learning. According to Glover, Miller, Averis and Door, it is necessary for teachers to progress through various stages with the technology before there is successful and efficient use of it. The first step is as visual support where it is seen by students as a novelty. The next step is when the teacher is more confident with the use of the technology and students see it less a novelty and more as tool to help exemplify unclear topics. The last stage of the progression is when the teacher uses the whiteboard as an essential part of most lessons to help meet the specific learning needs and styles of his or her students. Matching up the whiteboard technology with sound teaching practices was an important step to most efficiently integrate the technology. It was noted that he only way that this can happen is with practice, support and the sharing of ideas and lessons.
Another factor to successful use of interactive whiteboards mentioned in the article was that suitable professional development needs to be offered to the staff. In addition, administrators need to provide computer technicians and school technology leaders to assist inexperienced teachers and answer any questions that come up.
Some benefits to student learning were also mention in the article to help show the need for including this new technology into classrooms. It was noted that after the novelty of the technology wore off, students themselves noticed important benefits to their own learning. These included an increase in the recall of information and the interactive nature allowed for reinforcement and the revisiting of concepts and ideas.
The article relates well to the topic of technology knowledge, operations and concepts. It outlines how teachers can successfully incorporate whiteboard technology into their teaching practices. With this new knowledge and skill teachers can meet the needs of all types of learners through the use of interactive whiteboards.
I agree with most of the points made by the article, but I don’t think they proved them with evidence. They mention the research that they had done, but they did not include any specific examples and details. I would have found it helpful if they included sample lessons that were done at each stage of use. Also they didn’t mention any specific coaching points or professional development strategies. They just stated that it was necessary. I have only used an interactive whiteboard in my classroom a few times. I had thought that this article might help increase my knowledge of them, but it did not. It has restored my interest in trying to incorporate them more in lessons though.
