Reflection Standard 2
Making the connection to the learning environment is an important step for successful integration of technology. Having the technology flow smoothly within the context of various subject areas will help us create authentic learning experiences for our students. Computers and technology skills can not be taught in isolation and still have real meaning. Using these tools in conjunction with curriculum material will help students make connections to real life experiences and the relevance of their learning.
Using the computer as an add-on feels clumsy and uncomfortable. I critiqued the article entitled ?Leadership implications of using interactive whiteboards,? for TF I but I am realizing that it also relates to this standard. The focus was on truly integrating the SmartBoard within the content areas seamlessly as a tool to help students reach higher level thinking. The authors discuss the importance of teachers connecting teaching techniques and strategies with the interactive technology of whiteboards in order to realize the most benefits to learning.
Standard II ensures that teachers have resources to reach all learners. I recently assigned my students a project that required them to put together a presentation on some aspect of the Midwestern United States. The topic choices ranged from the land to architecture and the auto industry. This project allowed students the freedom to use the computer however they needed to ensure that their presentation was the best it could be. Some used the internet to find photos and information, others created PowerPoint presentations, and others used it for word processing. The students have been more motivated than I have seen them in a while. I think that the choice of topics interested them, but I also feel that the use of technology helped students see the relevance of the projects and made them work extra hard on these presentations. This presentation coincides with a unit I created for the course Using Integrated Software. It also was a good way to reach all the students. Students used the technology how they felt comfortable and was beneficial to all types of learners, from auditory to visual to kinesthetic.
Another project that I put together in the Distance Learning Course works well with this standard. I created an on-line course to help new teachers create a positive learning environment. By helping them set up classroom management techniques, organization and communication methods.
