5 Themes of Geography

Lesson Title:

Relating our world to the Five Themes

Material Needed:

Five themes poster, worksheet (classroom), pictures, paper and pencil

Objectives:

The LWBAT define the term geography; and identify the 5 themes of geography and give example of each as they relate to our classroom

Procedure:

1. Ask: what does geography mean?

  • Take responses
  • Write definition on chart paper.  The study of the earth and its features.

2.  Explain to the students that there are 5 themes of geography.  Ask what a theme is? 

3.  Hand out 5 Themes sheet.

4.  Discuss each theme individually and relate them to the classroom.  Students will write the examples on their worksheet.

Ø      Location-Give each group of desks a number and put post-it notes on each desk and # each desk.

Ø      Place-NJ-gets all 4 seasons.  It has a lot of people.  You can go to the beach in the summer and skiing in the winter. There are hills and flatlands.

Ø      Regions-grouping by common features. 

Ø      Human and environmental interaction-pros and cons of living in particular areas.  If you like the beach it’s better to live in NJ than Kansas. 

Ø      Movement-How do people and goods get around.  Transportation, communication.

5.  Once all themes have been discussed students will work in groups and brainstorm ways the 5 themes can be used to describe our school.

6.  For homework students will relate the 5 themes to their homes. 

7.  Mystery Assignment-Create a mental map of classroom.

Evaluation:

5 themes/home will be used to assess the students’ ability to define the 5 themes of geography.
