Tonight, through one simple kiss their true feelings for each other had surfaced, and they knew it. Mulder and Scully sat in the same row, but on opposite sides of the plane, representing the walls they had built up around themselves. When one of them was sure the other wasn't looking they would steal a glance at them, taking in every detail, hoping that the memory could last forever. Scully was sitting on the left, huddled up to the side of the plane, staring down through the window at nothing in particular. Her mind wouldn't wander from that kiss just hours earlier. She couldn't resist him when he lent in to kiss her, and then that beautiful smile afterwards. Maybe she had been a little insensitive, not smiling at Mulder like she should have after the kiss, but she couldn't. She was too overwhelmed with emotions to do much at all. He probably thought that she didn't approve of what he had just done, that she was embarrased. Then, he had put his arm around her and led her out of the hospital, not saying a word. On the right side of the plane Mulder was spread out along the three seats in his row, keeping himself amused with sunflower seeds. It wasn't working too well though, the kiss was still replaying through his mind, each time in slow motion. The sudden decision to make a move, to let Scully know how he felt, then her head turned and her lips met his. That would stick in his mind forever. What wouldn't stick was the stupid comment he made, which was born from nervousness, and that half smile that Scully gave. Did she not want to return the gesture becuase she did not feel the same way or was she afraid, like he had been. It was pouring rain when the flight eventually came to an end and the agents gathered their belongings and made their way out of the aircraft. Not even noticing, Mulder had placed his hand on Scully's back and let her out of the air bridge. This action was so automatic to him, that it was only when they were at the baggage carousel did he notice, but Scully didn't say a word. Both of their bags came onto the carousel together and Mulder stepped up to collect them. Mulder and Scully headed to the carpark to find their car. Mulder had taken an earlier flight than Scully so he took a taxi and Scully took one of thier FBI fleet sedans. This length of the journey was also silent. Scully searched frantically for something to say, but she couldn't generate any coversation topics. Mulder was doing the same, but he too failed. Mulder dropped Scully at her apartment, retrieving her bag from the trunk for her and trying to shelter her until she reached cover. "Good night Scully," Mulder tried to sound happier than he felt. "Good night Mulder," Scully returned along with a small smile. Scully went up to her apartment and when Mulder saw her lights come on he too turned his lights on and sped off. He couldn't go home though. He needed to sleep but he knew as long as the issue of the kiss was unresolved he wouldn't be able to. He drove around the city, finally finding himself back at the street Scully lived in. Scully threw her bags on the bedroom floor and went to shower. She tried to use the flowing water from the shower as an agent to cleanse the mind, and wash away all the worries and doubts that had formed in her mind. Unable to clear her conscience Scully dressed in her white satin pajamas and went to put some music on. Mulder couldn't stop himself, he needed to see Scully, he needed to tell her how he felt and he needed to know that she felt the same way. He braved the rain and made his way out of the car and up to Scully's apartment. Scully jumped when her door swung open, then she saw who was there and relaxed. Mulder had used his key in fear that Scully wouldn't answer her door and was now standing awkwardly in her living room. Before Scully could speak Mulder walked over to Scully, took her face in his hands and kissed her harder and longer than ever before. He felt Scully respond but before they continued he needed to say something. "I love you Scully," Mulder said softly. He could see tears forming in her eyes and didn't know how to interpret it. Was it that she was sad for him because she didn't love him, or was it that she was overcome with happiness about what she had just heard. Scully returned Mulder's kiss and then pulled away before he knew what was happening. "I love you too Mulder," Scully whispered. "I always have." THE END
