Laying a foundation for success starts when the season ends.
Strength Training: This is an area in which every athlete can develop and improve greatly in. Strength training will make you a bigger, faster, stronger and more confident athlete.
Mental Training: Setting goals, developing a plan of attack to reach them, and programming your mind to succeed is the most important piece of the athletic puzzle. Read about and study successful people, pick good role models and fill your mind with positive thoughts at all times. Your actions control your destiny. Success will become an expectation and a habit for you if you are willing to work hard at it.
Speed and Agility Training: Commit a few minutes a day to improving your footwork, speed, balance and agility. Dot drills, jump rope and form running drills take only minutes to perform and are great warm-ups prior to lifting weights or practice.
Sound Nutrition: Consuming adequate amounts of good, “clean” foods, drinking plenty of water (not pop!), and using safe and proven nutritional supplements can greatly increase your training progress. Getting plenty of sleep (8-9 hours every night!) and avoiding drugs, alcohol and tobacco also is critical to maximizing your progress. Eating and sleeping poorly, in addition to drug usage minimizes your progress as an athlete.
Sport Skills: Take advantage of opportunities to develop and improve your athletic skills. Off-season league teams, summer camps / clinics, practicing with friends and teammates help to give you an advantage over others competing with you for playing time. It also raises odds for team success.
Conditioning: Athletes and teams who go into their season in peak physical condition have a huge advantage over those in poor condition. The amount and intensity of pre-season running / conditioning activities often is the difference in winning and losing a contest.
Champions are built, not born. You must earn the right to win in the off-season.
