East Coast of New Zealand
Part Two
Penguins!  The most northerly yellow-eyed penguin nest in the world just happened to be a 15 minute walk from the farmhouse.  We've both always wanted to see penguins, so we visited them almost everyday. :)
Hiding and stalking the male as he ventured out towards the sea, We got almost a full roll of great shots. Cute!
About 24 hitched rides brought us about 3300 Km around New Zealand. Its a great way to meet local people, as well as the odd traveller, and a huge part of the adventure of travelling down here.  Heres Kendra where we were dropped off next to the worlds largest collection of milk separaters... Amazing, I know
South to Dunedin, where we met up with a good friend's brother and had a great time watching rugby, until the unthinkable happened.  New Zealand was tragically knocked out of the Rugby World Cup in the semifinals.  We also climbed the worlds steepest street, Baldwin Street.
OK, so it may not look so steep, but it got us gasping for breath.  I'd say there are some streets that are pretty close in St. Johns, if any newfs want to dig out their protractors.
The southern bit of the Southern Alps seems to sneak up from nowhere.  This definately was the middle of nowhere, and of course it was exactly where the farmer dropped us off.  The scenery here (and everywhere in NZ for that matter) looks exactly like the scenery in the Lord of the Rings movies, probably because they were filmed here.
