Thailand:
in and around Bangkok

SE Asia Home
Bangkok, the hub of SE Asia and capital of the Thai kingdom.  Also a convenient base for us as we waited for our Cambodian and Vietnamese visas to go through.
The chedis (pagodas) of the grand palace rise above the palace walls as a tuk tuk speeds by. More pictures of both can be seen on our other Thai pages from our previous trip (2002).
As afternoon turns into evening the street carts appear selling everything from spicey papaya salad to chicken on a stick to fried thai noodles. A delicious and cheap way to get supper!
Extra time in Bangkok meant that we could explore some of the surrounding area. Kanchanaburi, home to the Bridge on the River Kwai, was only a short train ride away.
On the train, munching on some fresh mango with two fellow travellers from Australia.
And the famous bridge itself, or at least the one that was built after the original was bombed by the Allies during WWII.
Surprise of all surprises: we found ourselves in the same town as Eva, our good friend from Mt.A, who was also in the process of travelling around that part of the world.  Here she is enjoying ice coffee out of a bag.
With Eva, we continued on to Ayutthaya, Thailands old capital (14th-18th century). Today it is filled with ruins left from over from the Burmese invasion that destroyed it.  Some of these ruins are still quite magnificant and make for beautiful silouettes against a setting sun.
