On February 6th we flew to Bali from Darwin. We had entered a world more foreign to us than any we had yet experienced. Poor, undeveloped and overcrowded, but also exotic and full of ancient history and culture.
Unlike the rest of Indonesia, hinduism is Bali's most prominent religion.
Flag posts like those on the left line the streets reminding people that no matter how high they get in society's hierarchy, they should always bend to help those below.
On the left is a statue of a god at a hindu temple. People pile offerings on it morning and evening with the hope of receiving good fortune.
Bali is also home to a Monkey forest in Ubud. Within its walls lie ancient and sometimes abandoned temples, not to mention....
...monkeys!! These playful little critters live in the "wild" per say but willingly accept handouts from enchanted tourists.
Not far from Ubud are the rice fields of Gunung kawi...
...and Gunung Kawi itself, an ancient temple carved right out of the stone of the hillside.
