Images of Cambodia
Part 4
People here make their living in many different ways:
This is the kings palace. We're not quite sure what he does but he sure does have a nice place.Beautiful green lawns and trees, ornate buildings...
...life for the everyday person is slightly different.
Most Khmers (Cambodians) do all their shopping at the markets. This is the Central Market, one of the biggest in town. With a busy but vibrant atmosphere it is the scene of friendly haggling and socializing.
Street markets are also common. We were surprised to see a girl so young take up the vendors role but if it helps feed the family, what choise is there?
Other families make their living by operating street-side restaurants. This one was right across from our guesthouse.
Some kids don't have a family business to help out with and are relegated to making a life on the street, collecting recyclables.
Others chose to move to a temple and live as a monk. Similar to the monks in Thailand, Khmer monks also make their morning rounds begging for food or money. The identifying feature of a Khmer monk is that they all carry yellow or black umbrellas.
And the monkeys...well they're residents of Phnom Penh too! Most make their home in the trees around Wat Phnom and make their living from generous passers-by.
